The present disclosure is directed to an energy storage system including a power source and a power converter coupled to the power source. The power converter is configured to output power suitable for consumption in a utility grid. The energy storage system also includes an energy storage device configured to receive the power output from the power converter and a charge discharge converter coupled between the power converter and the energy storage device. The charge discharge converter is configured to control at least one of charging or discharging the energy storage device. Furthermore, the energy storage device includes a transformer coupled between the charge discharge converter and the power converter.

Systems and methods for operating an energy storage system in a doubly fed induction generator wind turbine system are provided. An energy storage system can include a transformer configured to transform AC power from a first voltage to AC power at a second voltage and a bi-directional AC to DC power converter coupled to the transformer. The bi-directional AC to DC power converter can be configured to convert the AC power at the second voltage to a DC power. The energy storage system can further include an energy storage device coupled to the bi-directional AC to DC power converter. The energy storage system can be configured to receive power generated by a rotor of the DFIG via an AC line bus. The energy storage device can be configured to store the power received by the energy storage system.

Energy storage system for doubly fed induction generator

Systems and methods for operating an energy storage system in a wind turbine system are provided. A wind turbine system can include a wind turbine, a power conversion system operably coupled to the wind turbine and an AC line bus, and an energy storage system coupled to the AC line bus. The energy storage system can include a transformer, a power converter, and an energy storage device and can be configured to store and provide power generated by the wind turbine. The method can include operating the wind turbine system to generate power, determining one or more operating parameters for the wind turbine system, determining an operating mode based on the one or more operating parameters, and controlling the wind turbine system based at least in part on the operating mode. Controlling the wind turbine can control a power flow into or out of the energy storage system.

This disclosure relates to systems and methods for controlling a wind converter for a weak electrical grid. In one embodiment of the disclosure, a system for controlling the wind converter includes a wind converter connected to an electrical grid at a point of connection (POC) and operable to transfer a power to the electrical grid. The system includes a first control loop operable to calculate, based on electrical grid parameters and wind converter characteristics, a voltage reference to be generated by the wind converter. The system includes a second control loop to convert, based on the electrical grid parameters, the voltage reference into a current reference. The second loop converts the angle information of the voltage reference into a voltage at the POC. The system includes a third control to regulate, based at least on the current reference, the power transferred by the wind converter to the electrical grid.

Wind converter control for weak grid

The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for protecting a power converter of a renewable energy power system and/or a stand-alone energy storage system connected to a power grid during an adverse voltage event, such as a high voltage ride through (HVRT) event. In one embodiment, the method includes monitoring, via a control system, a current-voltage parameter of the power converter, wherein the current-voltage parameter is indicative of an adverse voltage event occurring at the power grid. Another step includes transferring, via a switching power supply, energy from a DC link of the power converter to one or more energy storage devices of an energy storage system coupled to the power converter when the current-voltage parameter indicates that an adverse voltage event is occurring.

System and method for protecting a power converter during an adverse voltage event

A power generation system includes integrated photovoltaic (PV) panels. Each of the integrated PV panel includes photovoltaic cells, a junction coupler coupling the photovoltaic cells in series, in parallel, or in combinations thereof, output terminals, and a DC to AC converter coupled between the junction coupler and the output terminals. The DC to AC converter includes switching devices and the integrated PV panels are coupled in series at the respective output terminals. A controller is provided in the power generation system for generation switching command signals for the switching devices of the integrated PV panels to synthesize an output voltage of the power generation system.

A multilevel converter includes a plurality of phase legs each having at least two inner switching devices, at least two outer switching devices, at least two clamping diodes, a split DC link and a switching device failure detection circuit. The switching device failure detection circuit includes a logic module for each of the switching devices, a voltage calculation module and a failure detection algorithm. The logic module generates a blocking state logic signal by comparing a switching device voltage and a threshold reference voltage and the voltage calculation module determines an expected voltage blocking state for each of the switching devices based on the gate drive signals of the switching devices and an output current direction. The failure detection algorithm detects a failure condition in any of the switching devices based on the blocking state logic signals and the expected voltage blocking states of the switching devices.

Switching device failure detection system and method for multilevel converters

A control system for a multilevel converter includes a differential mode current regulator, a neutral point (NP) controller and a PWM controller for generating switching pulses for the multilevel converter. The differential mode current regulator generates reference voltage command signals based on a difference between reference current command signals and actual current command signals, and the NP controller determines a modified neutral point current signal in response to a DC link voltage unbalance. The NP controller utilizes the modified neutral point current signal to generate a common mode reference voltage signal. The switching pulses are generated by the PWM controller based on the reference voltage command signals and the common mode reference voltage signal.

DC-link voltage balancing system and method for multilevel converters

A three level neutral point clamped (NPC) converter includes a plurality of phase legs each having at least two inner switching devices, at least two outer switching devices, at least two clamping diodes, and a protection circuit. An inner component failure sensing circuit is employed in the protection circuit to detect a failure condition in any of the inner switching devices or clamping diodes. The protection circuit further includes a gating signal generation circuit configured to generate a turn ON signal for a respective outer switching device that is adjacent to the failed inner switching device or the clamping diode.

System and method for protection of a multilevel converter

A power inverter system includes a DC to AC inverter configured to convert DC voltage from a DC power source to AC voltage. A DC link couples the DC power source and the inverter. An inverter pre-charger operates to pre-charge the inverter to achieve a desired DC link voltage prior to connecting the power inverter system to an AC power grid. A phased lock loop synchronizes the pre-charged inverter to the AC power grid prior to connecting the power inverter system to the AC power grid. The pre-charged inverter regulates the DC link voltage to about the minimum voltage level that allows control of AC grid currents via the inverter subsequent to connecting the power inverter system to the AC grid. The inverter operates in a maximum power point tracking control mode only subsequent to a first voltage transient caused by connecting the DC power source to energize the power inverter system.
