A method of preparing a tobacco material for use in a smokeless tobacco product is provided, the method including receiving a tobacco material, wherein the tobacco material has not been subjected to a fermentation process, blending the tobacco material with the final moist snuff product ingredients to form a tobacco composition having a moisture content of at least about 50%, packaging the tobacco composition in a final product packaging such that after a fermentation period of 7 to 28 days within the final product packaging the product is ready for direct sale and consumption.

Method for fermenting tobacco

A method for reducing the content of nitrosamines in a tobacco material is provided herein, the method involving the steps of contacting a tobacco material with a treatment solution so as to form a treatment composition containing, in addition to the tobacco material, an acid, a complexing agent, a solvent, and, optionally, a salt, at a pH of about 5.5 or less, to obtain a tobacco material having a tobacco-specific nitrosamine content that is lower than the initial tobacco-specific nitrosamine content. The method can optionally include further processing of the tobacco material. Smoking articles and other tobacco products incorporating such treated tobacco materials are also provided.

Methods for treating tobacco and tobacco-derived materials to reduce nitrosamines

The disclosure provides a method for improving the storage stability of a moist smokeless tobacco product configured for oral use, for example, a moist snuff tobacco product. The moist smokeless tobacco product includes a tobacco formulation containing a tobacco material. The method includes mixing the tobacco material with one or more antioxidants and one or more preservatives to form the tobacco formulation. The disclosure also provides a moist smokeless tobacco product incorporating a tobacco material and one or more antioxidants and one or more preservatives. Such moist smokeless tobacco products exhibit improved storage stability with respect to one or more characteristics such as nitrite, tobacco specific nitrosamine, organic acid, pH, and moisture content.

Stabilizer for moist snuff

Disclosed is a process for inhibiting formation of nitrosamines by bacteria in tobacco, comprising contacting the tobacco with a substance comprising a plurality of bacteriophages capable of lysing bacteria that form nitrosamines. Disclosed also is a tobacco product possessing a diminished concentration of nitrosamines.
