An air bag assembly utilizing a releasable anchoring structure operatively connected to one or more extendible tethering elements and providing adjustable cushion depth. A displaceable support element selectively engages or disengages the anchoring structure during operation of the vehicle taking into account steady-state inputs such as vehicle velocity, occupant size, seating position, and seat-belt use. The displaceable support element may be automatically engaged or disengaged from the anchoring structure as occupant and/or driving conditions change prior to actual air bag deployment.

Air bag assembly providing adjustable cushion depth

A cover assembly including a cover member and a cover displacement mechanism is provided. The cover displacement mechanism positions the cover within a vehicle about an opening formed in the vehicle. The cover selectively separates an interior of the vehicle from an exterior of the vehicle at the opening.

Method and apparatus for a deployable cover

An inflatable restraint assembly including an inflatable curtain structure deployable from a storage position along the roof rail of the vehicle so as to extend downwardly over an area within the vehicle interior adjacent to an occupant to be protected. The inflatable curtain structure is deployed downwardly along a deployment path from its storage location along the roof rail of the vehicle in substantially nonobstructing relation to shoulder harness structures and is thereafter anchored over the covered area in a substantially tensioned configuration.

Side air bag for roll-over restraint

An inflatable curtain structure for deployment within the interior of a transportation vehicle. The curtain structure includes a main body portion and an inflatable portion above the main body portion. The curtain structure is attached to the roof rail of the vehicle at locations of attachment extending in a hinge forming pattern between the main body portion and the inflatable portion above the main body portion such that upon inflation of the inflatable curtain structure the inflatable portion disposed above the main body portion expands in cushioning relation between the roof rail and the occupant.

Side air bag providing enhanced coverage

The present invention provides variable deployment performance by controlling the heat content of the inflator gas which exits an air bag sub-module, disposed in a module, into an air bag cushion. The air bag sub-module includes a sub-module housing which receives an inflator in a central cavity formed therein. The module housing includes low output module ports formed in the module housing and high output module ports. Heat sinking material is disposed within the sub-module housing between an outer wall of the sub-module housing and the inflator such that the heat sinking material surrounds the low output module ports. The air bag sub-module provides a first fluid flow path for the heated inflator gas to flow under high level deployment conditions and a second fluid flow path for the inflator gas to flow under reduced level deployment conditions. The first fluid flow path comprises a low resistance fluid flow path in which the heated inflator gas exits the inflator through the high output module ports. Little or no heated inflator gas will flow through the second fluid flow path, which comprises a high resistance fluid flow path, because in order for the inflator gas to flow according to the second fluid flow path, the inflator gas must pass through the high resistance heat sink material and the low output module ports. The heat content of the inflator gas is reduced by forcing the inflator gas to flow according to the second fluid flow path.

Variable output air bag module with PAV heat sink

The present invention presents an inflator providing variable output inflation of an air bag cushion in response to full or reduced level deployment conditions. The inflator of the present invention includes a first chamber for storing an inert gas, a second chamber in fluid communication with the first chamber, and a third chamber in selective fluid communication with the second chamber, the third chamber for storing a heat modifier for varying a heat value of the inert gas. The inflator also includes a pyrotechnic device having a combustible material for heating the inert gas and a first initiator for actuating the pyrotechnic device upon first and second deployment conditions. A second initiator for opening the third chamber to the second chamber is provided wherein actuation of the second initiator causing the heat modifier to fluidly communicate with the combustible material and vary the heat value of the inert gas during a combustion process. The second initiator is actuated during second deployment conditions.

Variable output inflator for an air bag

A variable output air bag inflator is presented wherein in one embodiment the inflator offers variable output and may be implemented with either pyrotechnic or hybrid inflators. The inflator offers full level deployment at a first end of the inflator unit and reduced level deployment at a second end. This is accomplished by providing two discrete paths for the inflator gas to flow during deployment of the air bag cushion. One path communicates with a first filter material or permits the hot inflation gas to directly exit the inflator without passing through a filter material. The other path communicates with a second filter material which absorbs heat from the inflator gas as it passes through the second filter material before exiting the inflator, wherein the second filter material has a heat sink capacity greater than the first filter material. The energy content and pressure of the inflator gas is therefore regulated by directing the inflator gas through the second filter material.

Variable output inflator with adaptive heat sinking

An air bag module and steering wheel assembly includes an air bag module and a steering wheel. The air bag module includes a base plate and an air bag. At least one mounting member extends from the base plate and through the air bag to attach the air bag to the base plate. A cover has at least one vertically extending side wall including at least one cover slot in which the air bag and base plate are loosely seated therein while leaving the cover free for manual removal from the base plate. The air bag is trapped in the cover slot between side wall and the base plate. The steering wheel has a receiving area for receiving the module therein for attachment to the steering wheel. An upstanding capture plate forms a vertically extending wall generally surrounding the receiving area. The capture plate engages the side wall of the cover when the module is inserted into the receiving area and captures the side wall of the cover and the air bag between the base plate and the capture plate such that the cover and the air bag are anchored to the base plate for withstanding the forces of air bag inflation.

Air bag module and steering wheel assembly

A steering wheel and air bag module assembly includes a steering wheel having a hub portion and a rim portion and a plurality of spoke portions connecting the hub portion to the rim portion. An air bag module is mounted to the hub portion and includes an air bag cover having a generally planar top surface. The top surface of the cover includes first, second, and third weakened portions defining a single Y-shaped tear pattern substantially covering the top surface of the cover. The air bag cover preferably has a generally planar top surface and generally vertical side portions extending generally downward from the top surface. The air bag cover includes a plurality of primary flap portions located substantially on the top surface and a plurality of secondary flap portions located substantially on the side portions. Advantageously, the primary and secondary flap portions and the Y-shaped tear pattern cooperatively provide an enlarged opening for air bag deployment.

Air bag cover

A restraint cushion includes a generally quadrangular sheet of material having a central portion and four corner portions extending from the central portion. Each corner portion has a fold line adjacent the central portion and two free edges extending from the fold line and intersecting each other to form a point. A mounting portion extends from one of the corner portions. The mounting portion has a cushion opening therein for receiving inflator gas therethrough to inflate the air bag. The mounting portion has outer edges which are spaced apart from the cushion opening. The corner portions are folded about the fold lines in overlying relationship to the central portion and in mating relationship to corresponding outer edges of the mounting portions. Each of the corner portions has one of the free edges joined to one of the outer edges of the mounting portion and each of the free edges is spaced apart from the cushion opening. Thus, the mounting portion and cushion opening are not disrupted by the mating edges forming the cushion.

Inflatable restraint cushion

An air bag module and steering wheel assembly includes an air bag module and a steering wheel. The air bag module includes a base plate, an air bag attached to the base plate, and a cover having downwardly extending side walls loosely connected to the base plate while leaving the cover free for manual removal from the base plate, yet being sufficiently sturdy for transporting and storing of the module. The steering wheel includes an upstanding capture plate forming a vertically extending wall surrounding a receiving area. The capture plate engages the side walls of the cover when the module is inserted into the receiving area and captures the side walls of the cover between the base plate and the capture plate such that the cover is anchored to the base plate for withstanding the forces of air bag inflation.

An air bag module includes an axially elongated first mounting member having an upper portion mounted to an air bag retainer and having a rearwardly extending portion extending through an air bag and an inflator flange. In addition, the module includes an axially elongated second mounting member having an internal axial bore therethrough for securely engaging the rearwardly extending portion of the first mounting member therein. The second mounting member securely traps the air bag and inflator flange when the second mounting member is fully engaged with the first mounting member. The second mounting member also is adapted for mounting the module to support portion of the vehicle.

Air bag module

A supplemental restraint system including an air bag for use in a vehicle to restrain an occupant during a sudden deceleration or collision. The air bag is folded in a hexagon configuration and mounted on a generally circular base unit such that the shape of the air bag, as folded, generally complements the shape of the base unit, thereby facilitating reducing unused space.

Air bag fold and method

A supplemental restraint system including an air bag for use in a vehicle to restrain an occupant during a sudden deceleration or collision. The air bag is folded in a triangular configuration and mounted on a generally quadrangular base unit such that the shape of the air bag, as folded, generally complements the quadrangular shape of the base unit.
