A fuel injection nozzle 10 having a nozzle body 12 to which is attached a banjo-type inlet stud 16, by means of heat shrinking. After the shrink fit attachment, a blind passage 20, 22 in the delivery tube portion 134 of the inlet is drilled through to penetrate the nozzle body and form a leak-tight fuel delivery path. A locating plate 106 is supported by a bore 96 in the cylinder head 80 adjacent the nozzle and orients the nozzle into a preselected orientation. In one nozzle embodiment 70, the tip 76 is sealed against the cylinder head socket 84 by a frustoconical copper annular seal member 82 that is preferentially loaded toward the inner seal diameter. The nozzle cap 14 forms a spring chamber in which a spring subassembly 42 including upper and lower spring seats 48, 46, a spring 44, and stem 186 and pedestal 84 piloting the spring, cooperate to permit independent setting of the valve lift off stop limit F and the spring preload B. The components internal to the nozzle body are all insertable serially, without the need for rotation or other complex fabrication steps. A nozzle removal tool 250 adapted for use with the nozzle includes a yoke member 258 for engaging a shoulder 268 on the nozzle and a jackscrew 254 and jacking bolt 252 arrangement concentric with each other, for lifting the nozzle from its socket in the cylinder head.

Fuel injection nozzle

A fuel injection nozzle 10 having a nozzle body 12 to which is attached a banjo-type inlet stud 16, by means of heat shrinking. Method of assembling a fuel nozzle assembly

A fuel injection nozzle and clamp assembly includes an improved nozzle holder having an inlet fitting arrangement which uniformly distributes clamping forces to secure the nozzle to an engine cylinder head without exerting a bending moment on the nozzle. A fuel inlet member extends through a cross bore in the nozzle holder and projects outwardly on opposite sides thereof. A channel-shaped clamp member straddles the nozzle holder body and is provided with notches which receive and engage the projecting ends of the inlet member on opposite sides of the nozzle holder body to secure and orient the nozzle in the cylinder head.

Fuel injection nozzle and clamp assembly

A liquid fuel injection pump for supplying timed charges of fuel to an engine by timed pumping strokes includes an adjustable timing mechanism for changing the timing of the pumping strokes. The timing mechanism includes an advance piston which is variably positionable in response to two different hydraulic control pressures. A speed related control pressure operates a servo mechanism associated with the advance piston to provide a component of speed advance. The reference position of a servo spring associated with the servo mechanism is varied by the second control pressure acting against a piston which mounts the spring and which is biased to a position of relatively advanced timing, thereby to add a component of advance which modifies or supplements the speed advance. The second control pressure is correlated with engine load and/or acceleration and in one embodiment is derived from the positioning of the fuel metering means and in another embodiment is derived from the intake manifold air pressure such as that from a turbocharged engine so that the timing is relatively advanced at low loads and during acceleration, and is relatively retarded at higher loads. A gate controlled by the position of a fuel limiting plunger coacts with the advance piston's servo mechanism to prevent advance of the advance piston during engine cranking, and maximum fuel delivery per pumping stroke is controlled according to intake manifold air pressure.

Fuel injection pump and timing control therefor

The present invention provides a liquid fuel injection pump suited for the sequential delivery of measured charges of liquid fuel under high pressure to an associated engine in timed relationship therewith comprising pump chamber means wherein the charges are pressurized to high pressure, a passage for delivering the fuel to said pump chamber means, a metering valve in said passage for reglating the amount of fuel in said measured charges of fuel, said metering valve comprising a pair of relatively movable members respectively having ports in the adjacent surfaces thereof adapted for registry, means to vary the amount of overlap of said ports in a first direction to control the quantity of fuel in each measured charge of fuel in accordance with the load on the associated engine, and means for controlling the relative movement of said members in a second direction transverse to said first direction to vary the amount of overlap of said ports in said second direction in accordance with the speed of the associated engine whereby the amount of overlap in said second direction increases with increased engine speed thereby to maintain the quantity of fuel in sequential charges of fuel at a substantially constant level for a given setting of said means regardless of changes in engine speed.

Fuel injection pump and governor and timing control system therefor

This invention relates to improved fuel injection apparatus for compression-ignition engines and the like and more particularly to a novel and improved check valve arrangement for a rotary distributor fuel injection pump of the type employed for the delivery of a measured amount of fuel to each of the cylinders of an associated internal combustion engine.

Fuel injection pump and replaceable check valve therefor

There is disclosed a rotary distributor type liquid fuel injection pump for delivering measured charges of fuel under high pressure sequentially to the cylinders of an associated engine in timed relation therewith. The pump includes a movable metering valve for regulating the quantity of fuel in the charges. The metering valve also controls a normally closed bypass port which is opened by the metering valve as the metering valve approaches its closed position to continue the circulation of cool fuel from the supply tank through the pump whenever the metering valve is closed as during the downhill coasting of the vehicle on which the pump is mounted.
