A hybrid document includes a flexible document having visible markings. One or more light-controlling elements and a controller are embedded in or on the flexible document. The controller is electrically connected to the one or more light-controlling elements to control the one or more light-controlling elements. A power input connection is electrically connected to the controller, or one or more light-controlling elements, or both. A power source can be connected to the power input connection, for example a piezoelectric or photovoltaic power source. In response to applied power, the controller causes the one or more light-controlling elements to emit light. In some embodiments, the controller includes a memory and a value can be stored in the memory and displayed by the light-controlling element(s). In some embodiments, the value can be assigned or varied by a hybrid currency teller machine.

Piezoelectric power components

A light-emitting module structure comprises a support substrate and a micro-module disposed on or in the support substrate that extends over only a portion of the support substrate. The micro-module comprises a rigid module substrate, an inorganic light-emitting diode, a power source, and a control circuit. The inorganic light-emitting diode, the power source, and the control circuit are disposed on or in the module substrate and the control circuit receives power from the power source to control the inorganic light-emitting diode to emit light. A light conductor is disposed on or in the support substrate and in alignment with the micro-module so that the inorganic light-emitting diode is disposed to emit light into the light conductor and the light conductor conducts the light beyond the micro-module to emit the light from the light conductor.

A micro-device structure includes an insulating layer and a micro-device disposed on the insulating layer. A pocket is formed in the micro-device that extends from a surface of the micro-device opposite the insulating layer through the micro-device to the insulating layer. A micro-component is disposed in the pocket and is non-native to the micro-device and the insulating layer. The micro-component can emit or receive light through the insulating layer and can be connected to and controlled by a micro-circuit disposed in the micro-device.

A current-selectable light-emitting-diode (LED) display includes pixels distributed in an array of rows and columns. The pixels are grouped in mutually exclusive clusters and cluster controllers are connected to each pixel in a cluster of pixels to control the pixels in the cluster to emit light. Each cluster controller comprises a selectable current source. Each of the selectable current sources can include cluster current sources that are responsive to a current-select signal to enable one or more of the cluster current sources. The pixels can include micro-LEDs and the cluster controller can be disposed between the micro-LEDs. The display can be disposed on a display substrate with signal wires. The signal wires can include separate wire segments that are electrically connected through regeneration circuits that regenerate the signals. The display can be an information display or a backlight.

Displays with current-controlled pixel clusters

An electro-optically controlled active-matrix system comprises a system substrate, row wires extending in a row direction disposed on the system substrate, a row controller providing a row electrical signal to each row wire, column light-pipes extending in a column direction disposed on the system substrate, a column controller providing a column optical signal to each column light-pipe, and pixels disposed over the system substrate. Each pixel can comprise a pixel circuit that is uniquely responsive to a row wire and to a column light-pipe, the pixel circuit receiving the row electrical signal from the row wire and receiving the column optical signal from the column light-pipe. In some embodiments, column wires carrying column electrical signals extend in a column direction over the system substrate and the pixel circuit is capacitively coupled to the row wire, the column wire, or both.

Hybrid electro-optically controlled matrix-addressed systems

A method of making a micro-module structure comprises providing a substrate, the substrate having a substrate surface and comprising a substrate post protruding from the substrate surface. A component is disposed on the substrate post, the component having a component top side and a component bottom side opposite the component top side, the component bottom side disposed on the substrate post. The component extends over at least one edge of the substrate post. One or more component electrodes are disposed on the component.

A pulse-density-modulation display and image capture system comprises a display comprising a plurality of pixels. Each pixel comprises a light emitter that controllably emits light at a constant current for a variable amount of time and a control circuit connected to the light emitter to control the light emitter to emit light in response to an input signal specifying the desired luminance of the light emitter. The control circuit converts the input signal to a non-contiguous pulse-density-modulation signal and controls the light emitter to emit light in response to the non-contiguous pulse-density-modulation signal with a temporally variable constant-current control signal. Each pixel emits light responsive to a display timing signal. The pulse-density-modulation display and image capture system also comprises a sampling camera that records the pixels and is responsive to a camera timing signal different from the display timing signal.

An analog pulse-width-modulation circuit comprises an analog storage circuit, a load circuit responsive to control signals to load (e.g., store analog information in) the analog storage circuit, a discharge circuit that discharges the analog storage circuit over time, a constant-current supply providing a constant current, a digital switch responsive to the discharge circuit that switches the constant current, and a functional element connected to the digital switch that operates in response to the constant current. The analog pulse-width-modulation circuit can comprise an output control circuit that isolates or connects the discharge circuit from the analog storage circuit.

Analog pulse-width-modulation control circuits

An inorganic light-emitting diode (iLED) display comprises a display substrate comprising a display area and one or more holes extending through the display substrate in the display area and a plurality of inorganic light-emitting diodes (iLEDs) disposed on, in, or over the display substrate in a regular array in the display area. At least some of the iLEDs are disposed between at least some of the holes in the display area and at least some of the holes are between at least some of the iLEDs in the display area. The display substrate can be substantially rigid and the iLED display can a flexible black sheet laminated, affixed, or adjacent to the display substrate. One or more audio loudspeakers can be disposed adjacent to the flexible sheet with the flexible sheet disposed between the display substrate and the one or more audio loudspeakers.

An active-matrix digital-drive display system includes an array of pixels. Each pixel has an output device, a serial digital memory responsive to a load timing signal for receiving and storing a multi-bit digital pixel value during an uninterrupted load time period, and a drive circuit responsive to a pulse-width-modulation (PWM) timing signal and to the multi-bit digital pixel value to drive the output device during an uninterrupted output time period. A controller external to the array of pixels provides to each pixel the load timing signal and the multi-bit digital pixel value during the load time period and the PWM timing signal during the output time period. The PWM timing signal has multiple different PWM time periods that are sequentially provided at different times to the pixels. Each PWM time period has a different temporal length corresponding to a bit of the multi-bit digital pixel value.
