An integrated system for certifying the safety and efficacy of intravenous (&ldquo;IV&rdquo;) pumps is provided wherein a test station having a first component in liquid flow communication with a pump to be tested and a second component adopted for electrical connection to the pump can be operated accurately by persons without extensive technical training and without the need to ship the IV pump off-site. In a preferred embodiment, an output element prompts the operator to input responses based upon a prescribed test protocol to certify the safety and efficacy of the IV pump's operation.

A testing apparatus for an intravenous pump houses a first component adapted to test at least one liquid flow characteristic of the pump and a second component adapted to be coupled electrically to the pump to test at least one electrical characteristic of the pump. An interior panel compartmentalizes the housing into two compartments isolated one from the other. The first component is confined solely within one of the compartments and the second component is confined solely within the other one of the compartments.

The system and methods obtain a set of multiple data samples and derive an average of the data samples in the set (SET.sub.AVE). The systems and methods derive a standard deviation for the data samples in the set (SET.sub.STD). The systems and methods compare each of the data samples to SET.sub.STD and either reject the data sample, if the absolute difference between the data sample is greater than or equal to k * SET.sub.STD, where k is a selected value greater than zero, or retain the data sample, if the absolute difference between the data sample is less than k * SET.sub.STD. The systems and methods repeat the foregoing steps until the absolute difference between every data sample remaining in the set is less than k * SET.sub.STD. The systems and methods then derive a filtered average for the set FSET.sub.AVG, where FSET.sub.AVE is the SET.sub.AVG for the data set in which the absolute difference between every data sample remaining in the set is less than k * SET.sub.STD. The systems and methods find application in the calculation of pump flow rates, particularly using gravimetric calculation techniques.
