The insect bait station comprises an outer shell covered with a toxicant-infused wax coating, and an insect lure disposed within the outer shell. Insects are drawn to the bait station by the insect lure (preferably a fruit fly lure). When the insects land on the bait station they are killed by the toxicant within the bait station wax coating.

Insect bait station method and apparatus

Compositions and lures are described which provide synthetic chemical attractants which function as highly effective attractants for male and female moths, primarily moths of the family Noctuidae. In one aspect, the attractants provide an effective attractant amount of vapor of 3-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-pentanol or mixtures thereof. In another aspect, the attractants provide vapor blends of acetic acid and one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of 3-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-2-butanol, and 3-methyl-1-pentanol. By attracting male and female moths to traps or baits, the chemical attractants provide a means for detecting, surveying, monitoring, and controlling the moths.

Chemical attractants for moths

Compositions and lures are described which provide 3-alkyl-1-butanol vapors and vapor blends of 3-alkyl-1-butanol with one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, ammonia, putrescine and mixtures which function as highly effective attractants for frugivorous pest flies especially of Anastrepha species. By attracting frugivorous pest insects, the chemical attractants provide means for detecting, surveying, monitoring and/or controlling the pest fruit flies.

A release rate modulator for use with membrane-based formulations systems to control the release of a substance. The release rate modulator is formed from perforated polypropylene containing approximately 36 holes/cm.sup.2. Each hole is approximately 1 mm.sup.2 in size. The flow of substance passes through the holes and the membrane before reaching the surrounding environment. The use of the modulator improves the duration of substance release and provides a more constant release of the substance compared to unpredictable release rates obtained when the formulations systems did not contain the modulator.

A pheromonal compound produced by the sweetpotato weevil has been identified as (Z)-3-dodecen-1-ol (E)-2-butenoate. The synthetically-prepared compound demonstrates activity toward the sweetpotato weevil comparable to or greater than that of the natural female and comparable to that of its natural counterpart under field conditions. The novel compound provides a sensitive tool for detection of the sweetpotato weevil. By attracting adult weevils to field traps, this compound provides a means for monitoring and controlling this major agricultural pest.
