A portable ice storage and dispensing device has a portable container for housing the ice to be dispensed. An opening is formed on the portable insulated container. The opening is used for dispensing the ice out of the portable insulated container. An ice dispenser is located internal to the portable insulated container and extends partially out of the portable insulated container. The ice dispenser is used for moving and directing the ice out of the opening.

A paper cutter assembly for a printer/plotter is mounted on the printhead carriage for movement therewith to avoid separate mounting and guide structure. A cutter wheel is mounted in a housing for cam induced movement between a raised inactive position and a lower active position by engagement of a cam element carrier mounted for movement in the cutter housing with structure on the printer chassis. The printer platen has a stationary cutter bar which extends in a channel in the platen transversely of the path of paper movement and has a cutter wheel receiving well at one end of the channel into which the cutter wheel drops without contacting the platen or cutter bar at commencement of a cutting operation. Camming surfaces on the platen engage the side of a cutter drive wheel to move the cutter wheel into engagement with the cutter bar and then to raise the cutter wheel to the proper amount of operational overlap of the cutting edges as the cutter assembly moves across the paper path. The cutter wheel is moved between its inactive and active positions at one side of the media and damage to the cut edge of rollfeed media is prevented by retracting the rollfeed media edge away from the cutter bar as the cutter wheel returns to said one side of the media after a cut.

To assemble a printer chassis comprising three structural aluminium beams extending between two structural sideplates, the printer carriage beam is first attached to the sideplates by means of attachment points arranged along a straight line and then the printing beam and lower beam are attached to provide a vibration- and deformation-resistant chassis relative to which all the other printer components are referenced. Slider rods are mounted on the printer carriage beam by means of screws which hold the rods against the beam to keep them straight. The screws also pass through apertures in rod supports, the apertures being sized to permit longitudinal thermal movements of the rods relative to the beam.

Automatic paper cutter for large format printer

An inkjet printing system having a replaceable set of ink-related components which are installed together and replaced together with a single ink delivery system for each different color of ink. The set includes an ink printhead with an inlet port, an ink supply module, and a printhead service module, each of which is manually mountable by a user onto an inkjet printer. The ink supply module contains enough ink to completely replenish an entire printhead reservoir several times before the expected useful life of the printhead has expired, at which time a user can replace the entire set of ink-related components for a particular color. Similarly, the printhead service module is designed for reliable performance for the expected useful life of the printhead. This system enables the entire ink delivery system to be replaced for different printing needs, such as replacing indoor dye-based inks with outdoor pigment based inks.

A replaceable ink supply module which provides replenishment of an inkjet printhead includes a collapsible bag, an enclosure box, a connective tube, and an on/off valve. These four components are incorporated into a composite sealed system which remains intact during shipment, storage, installation and operation. The collapsible bag is placed inside of the protective enclosure box and has an end-connect outlet permanently attached to one end of the connective tube. The other end of the connective tube carries a permanently attached on/off valve designed for periodic engagement with an inlet valve of an inkjet printhead.

An inkjet printing device comprises a platen on which a printing zone is defined, a carriage, onto which at least a printhead is mounted, slidable along the printing zone near the platen, a service station, located in a service zone separated from the printing zone, a housing protecting and enclosing the printing zone and the servicing zone, and a device, for example a fan, for producing an air flow within the housing. A substantially constant air path is defined within the housing of the device through which the air flow is allowed to pass during its operation. A method for reducing ink aerosol in such a device, during its operation, comprises the following steps: producing an air flow within the housing, and forcing the air flow to pass through a substantially constant air path defined within the housing.

A printing system which provides active control of the vertical position of an off-carriage ink supply. The system includes an ink-jet print cartridge having an ink reservoir for holding a supply of liquid ink, and an ink replenishment port. A carriage holds the print cartridge, and a carriage scanning apparatus drives the carriage along a carriage scan axis. The system further includes an off-carriage ink supply which is connectable via a fluid path to the ink replenishment port of the cartridge. An elevator apparatus actively raises or lowers the off-carriage ink supply in response to drive commands to position the off-carriage ink supply at a plurality of different elevations relative to a vertical position of the print cartridge to supply ink to the ink replenishment port via the fluid path. The fluid path can be established intermittently, and disconnected during printing operations, or continuously established even during printing operations.

Active control of vertical position of an off-carriage ink supply

An inkjet printing system provides an automated mechanism for the connection/disconnection of an ink supply valve to inkjet printheads without having to remove the printheads from a carriage. The automated mechanism includes a bracket for holding a plurality of ink supply valves in a passive first position displaced from a corresponding number of inlet ports on inkjet printheads mounted in the carriage which moves back and forth across a print zone. During normal printing operations there is no connection between the ink supply valves and the inkjet printheads. When it becomes necessary to replenish ink in the printheads from a supplemental ink container connected to the ink supply valve, the carriage comes to a rest position away from the print zone, and a motor causes the bracket to move toward the carriage so that an ink supply valve can directly engage an inlet port on the inkjet printhead. In an exemplary embodiment, an ink cartridge having a reservoir capacity of about 40 cc. can receive about 15 cc. of ink from the supplemental ink container through the ink supply valve during a relatively short time period of approximately two minutes. Since the bracket moves all the ink supply valves as a group, all of the printheads are replenished at the same time, even through only one printhead may have reached a threshold level which triggered the replenishment procedure.

An inkjet printing system with an automated ink replenishment station for replenishing printhead ink reservoirs mounted in a carriage from removable off-carriage ink supply containers. The system includes a printer frame and a scanning carriage mounted on the frame for traversing back and forth along a scan axis through a print zone. At least one printhead is mounted on the carriage, and has a sealed printhead ink reservoir and a normally closed inlet valve in fluid communication with the printhead ink reservoir for receiving ink. The ink replenishment station is located on the frame at one end of the scan axis, and includes an ink supply. A normally closed supply valve is provided at the ink replenishment station in communication with the ink supply capable of periodic connection to said inlet valve. With the carriage positioned at the replenishment station, an automated motorized mechanism moves the supply valve into engagement with the inlet valve to provide a fluid path for ink to flow from the ink supply to the printhead ink reservoir without manual intervention.

Two printing-medium guide systems restrain the medium. One is in an area upstream (along the direction of medium advance) from the pen, and extending laterally across the width of the medium except in one or more regions laterally near the engagement of a print-medium advancing device. The other guide system is disposed laterally from the pen, and extends laterally across the medium only in one or more regions laterally near the engagement of the advancing device. Preferably these 'one or more regions' are only near the lateral edges of the medium--so that (1) the first guide system restrains the medium over an area that stops short (ideally about 11/2 centimeter short) of the lateral edges; and (2) the second guide system is bifurcated, disposed laterally in two directions from the pen, and restrains the medium across only the lateral edges of the medium (most preferably in a strip whose width is a few millimeters, ideally 3 mm). Preferably a human-actuable control selects a print-medium width, and shifts at least one bifurcation of the second guide system. A tensioning system, longitudinally beyond the marking head from the medium advancing device, and generally aligned laterally with that device, tensions the medium away from the advancing device to hold the medium taut at the pen. Preferably the advancing and tensioning devices are very closely spaced upstream and downstream, respectively, from the pen zone. When tensioned, the medium moves a normal distance through the apparatus at each operation of the advancing device; but after a trailing edge of the medium passes the advancing device (so that the medium is advanced only by the tensioner and no longer tensioned), the advance distance is decreased (preferably by about half).

An ink-jet printer having improved print quality and full color printing capability on plain paper media. To accommodate placement of both input and output media trays on the same side of the printer housing for operator convenience, a paper path with a direction reversal is employed. A paper preconditioning preheater with a curved surface and a multi-purpose paper path component accomplish the direction reversal. The paper path component is a unitary component which employs curved ribs to reduce the contact area with the medium and reduce static charge buildup, and has slots formed therein to release water vapor given off by the medium when preheated. The component permits paper to be loaded manually via a second manual feed path, through a housing, and upon opening a rear access door in the housing, such component is easily removable to facilitate operator access to the paper path and electrical components.
