An apparatus, system, and method for compensating for bone loss of a patient's knee joint during the performance of an orthopaedic surgical procedure includes determining an estimated amount of bone loss of a bone of a patient's knee joint, determining an anatomical distance between a femoral anatomical feature of a patient's femur and a tibial anatomical feature of a patient's tibia, and adjusting the determined anatomical distance based on the estimated amount of bone loss. The determined anatomical distance is indicative of a ligament length of a collateral ligament of the patient's knee joint. The bone loss may be estimated based on, for example, a surface curve fitting algorithm applied to a three-dimensional model of the bone, a defined bone loss amount provided by a user, or a comparison of the three-dimensional model of the bone to a statistical shape model that approximates the bone in a healthy state.

Apparatus, system, and method for bone loss compensation of a patient's knee joint during an orthopaedic surgical procedure

Technologies for aligning an acetabular prosthetic component in a patient's surgically prepared acetabulum include a reference sensor module securable to the patient's bony anatomy, an inserter sensor module securable to an acetabular prosthetic component inserter, and a display module. Each sensor module generates sensor data indicative of the orientation of the sensor module and/or structures to which the sensor module is coupled. The display module receives the sensor data from the sensor modules, determines the orientation of the acetabular prosthetic component relative to the patient's bony anatomy, and displays indicia of the determined orientation on a display.

An alignment guide is described that includes a shaft having a longitudinal axis and a housing attachable to the shaft and rotatable about a first axis that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. A guide arm the extends from the housing at a predetermined angle along a second axis. A spirit level is connected to the housing on a plane aligned with the predetermined angle.

A surgical instrument alignment guide comprising a mount () arranged to be coupled to a bone of a patient, an alignment rod (), a guide rod () and an indicator (). The alignment rod () has a first end pivotally coupled to the mount () such that the inclination of the alignment rod () relative to the mount () is adjustable. The guide rod () is couplable to a second end of the alignment rod () at an adjustable angle and orientation such that the guide rod () can extend transverse to the alignment rod (). The indicator () is coupled to the guide rod () to indicate when the guide rod () lies at a desired angle relative to a horizontal axis. An alignment guide is provided having a shaft with a longitudinal axis and a guide arm having a first portion, a second portion and a third portion. The first portion is attached to the shaft and configured to be rotatable about a first axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The second portion extends from the first portion at a first predetermined angle along a second axis. The third portion extends from the second portion at a second predetermined angle.

A method of aligning an alignment guide relative to a reamed acetabulum of a patient is provided. The method includes the step of manipulating an alignment guide comprising a shaft having a longitudinal axis and a guide arm having a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, the first portion attached to the shaft and configured to be rotatable about a first axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the second portion extending from the first portion at a first predetermined angle along a second axis, and the third portion extending from the second portion at a second predetermined angle. The guide arm is rotated about the first axis relative to the shaft. A cup or trial is attached to the distal end of the shaft and positioned to contact the reamed acetabulum. The third portion of the guide arm is then oriented with respect to the long axis of the patient and the surface of the table on which the patient is positioned.

Method of using an alignment guide

An orientation guide comprising a housing arranged to couple to a surgical instrument. In one embodiment the orientation guide further comprises first and second indicators (). The first indicator () is pivotally coupled to the housing () such that the first indicator () can rotate relative to the housing () about a first axis () to maintain its angular position about the first axis () relative to a vertical axis irrespective of movement of the housing (). The second indicator () surrounds the first indicator () and is pivotally coupled to the housing () such that the second indicator () can rotate relative to the housing () about a second axis () orthogonal to the first axis () to maintain its angular position about the second axis () relative to the vertical axis irrespective of movement of the housing (). The angular position of the housing () about the first and second axes () is indicated by the position of the first indicator () relative to the second indicator (). In a second embodiment the housing () comprises a cavity filled with a fluid. An indicator () is supported within the fluid such that the indicator () can rotate relative to the housing () about a first axis to maintain its angular position about the first axis relative to a vertical axis irrespective of movement of the housing (). The indicator () comprises a marking arranged to indicate the angular position of the indicator () relative to the housing () about the first axis. The housing () has at least one transparent portion for viewing the marking. A measuring element () is coupled to the housing () and arranged to slide relative to the housing () to be aligned with the indicator marking such that the angular position of the housing () about the first axis can be recorded.
