The present invention relates to novel antiviral compounds which are covalently attached to solid, macro surfaces. In another embodiment, the invention relates to novel antiviral compositions including a polymeric material and, embedded therein, an antiviral compound. In other embodiments, the invention relates to making a surface antiviral and making a polymeric material antiviral.

Antiviral compositions

In one embodiment, the invention relates to a method for rendering a non-metallic substrate stably antimicrobial. The method comprises: (a) contacting the substrate with an antimicrobial surfactant; (b) contacting the substrate with a polymeric binder; and (c) subjecting the substrate, surfactant, and binder to conditions at which the substrate becomes stably antimicrobial. In another embodiment, the invention relates to a substrate into which an antimicrobial surfactant and a binder have penetrated.

Method for conferring antimicrobial activity to a substrate

Antiviral compounds

The present invention is directed to providing antimicrobial compositions consisting of a polymeric material and, embedded therein, an antimicrobial compound. The antimicrobial compound contains at least one quaternary ammonium group, at least one hydrocarbon chain comprising a minimum of 10 carbon atoms and a maximum of 24 carbon atoms, and one or more anions to balance the charge of the quaternary ammonium groups. The invention is also directed to a method of making antimicrobial compositions containing an antimicrobial compound embedded in a polymeric material.

Embedding antibiotic compounds in solid polymers

The present invention provides novel antimicrobial agents that are quaternary ammonium functionalized glycodendrimers. In one embodiment, the quaternary ammonium functionalized glycodendrimers are compounds of Formula (I): (Q-S-L)-DXwherein: D is a dendrimer; n is the generation number of the functionalized dendrimer; z is an integer less than or equal to 2); L is a linking group; Qrepresents a quaternary ammonium moiety; and S represents a carbohydrate moiety. The present invention further provides formulations containing the antimicrobial agents of the invention, methods of making the agents and formulations of the invention, and methods of using the same as effective and/or broad spectrum antimicrobial agents. The agents and formulations of the invention find use in medicine, for the treatment of various inflammatory conditions or diseases, for example, and have numerous industrial applications.(Q-S-L)-DX&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)

Quaternary ammonium functionalized glycodendrimers, methods for the production and use thereof

In one embodiment, the invention provides an ion having the formula: (I) In another embodiment, the invention provides a method for modulating potassium, sodium, and cyclic nucleotide-modulated ion channels in a mammal in need thereof. In a further embodiment, the invention provides a method for modulating ligand-gated ion channels or transient receptor potential channels in a mammal in need thereof. The methods comprise administering an ion having the formula described above.

Dialkyl esters of 5-carbo[etiocholane-3'.alpha.-7'.alpha., 12'.alpha.-trihydroxy-17'.beta.(1' methyl-4' butyl]oxy-4-hydroxy-4-methylpentyl-1-phosphonate and 5-carbohexadecyloxy-4-hydroxy-4-methylpentyl-1-phosphonate are shown to inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis in rat liver cells. Preparation of the active compounds is given.
