Formulated compositions having good uncured ('green') and cured physical properties are disclosed. The compositions comprise at least one substantially linear ethylene/C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 .alpha.-olefin copolymer, or alternately, at least one linear ethylene/C.sub.5 -C.sub.20 .alpha.-olefin copolymer. The compositions are easily molded and have particular utility in making wire and cable coatings.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates are prepared by curing, at least partially by dynamic vulcanization, blends of chlorinated polyethylene and crystalline thermoplastic polymers such as polypropylene. Inclusion of a plasticizing material or extender oil, e.g. trioctyl trimellitate, enhances softness and oil resistance of the blends. Vulcanizing materials include a basic material, normally added with the chlorinated polyethylene, and (1) a derivative of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or (2) a combination of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadizaole and an activator material such as an amine having a boiling point of 110.degree. C. or higher and a pk value less than 4.5.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates are prepared by curing, at least partially by dynamic vulcanization, blends of chlorinated polyethylene and crystalline thermoplastic polymers such as polypropylene. Chlorosulfonated polyethylene materials having (a) weight average molecular weight of from about 40,000 to about 300,000, (b) a chemically combined chlorine content of from about 20 to about 50 percent by weight of polymer, (c) a chemically combined sulfur content of from about 0.8 to about 2.5 percent by weight of polymer and (d) a 100 percent modulus of from about 0.6 to about 4.8 megapascals are prepared in an anhydrous process wherein an amorphous chlorinated polyethylene starting material is first fluidized and then exposed to a gaseous mixture of sulfur dioxide and chlorine having a ratio of sulfur dioxide to chlorine of from about 1:1 to about 16:1 in the presence of a chlorine free radical generator such as ultraviolet light, at a temperature of from about 25.degree. to about 100.degree. Centigrade, for a period of two hours or less.

The use of polyvinyloctadecyl ethers as a processing modifier in the extrusion of polyolefin resins leads to a smoother surface of the extruded resin. Other beneficial effects include improved values of such important resin characteristics as tensile strength at break, percentage elongation at break, tearing resistance, and impact resistance.

The use of polyvinyloctadecyl ethers as a processing modifier in the extrusion of high-density polyethylene resins leads to a smoother surface of the extruded resin. Other beneficial effects include improved values of such important resin characteristics as tensile strength at break, percentage elongation at break, tearing resistance, and impact resistance.

Process and apparatus for extruding synthetic resinous thermoplastic materials, wherein a heat plastified stream of such material is divided into a primary or core stream, and non-primary or secondary stream(s), the secondary stream(s) heated to a temperature substantially hotter than the core stream, and the hot secondary stream(s) thereafter layered onto the opposite surfaces of the core stream prior to expelling the material from an extrusion die. Such a process and apparatus is practiced to avoid a loss of surface smoothness in the extruded product.
