Disclosed herein are linear block copolymers of formula A-B-A' or A-B*B-A&#x2032;, wherein blocks A and A&#x2032; are polystyrene blocks, block B is a poly(conjugated diene) block and * is a coupling agent having a vinyl content of from 10-60 mol %. The block copolymers have a polystyrene content of from 20-35 wt. %, relative to the overall weight of the block copolymer, and a molecular weight of from 200,000-300,000 g/mol. The block copolymers can be used with a wide variety of asphalt grades, and are valuable for producing homogeneous polymer modified asphalt compositions having an effective combination of performance properties, such as acceptable viscosity, good elastic response to an applied stress, and a low non-recoverable creep compliance. The combination of vinyl content and polymerization technology allows a high solution concentration during polymerization without excessive processing viscosity.

Block copolymers and polymer modified bitumen therefrom

A method of forming a paving composition using reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and/or reclaimed asphalt shingle (RAS) is provided. The method comprises: a) providing a rejuvenated asphalt binder consisting essentially of bitumen, a block copolymer and a bio-oil, wherein the rejuvenated asphalt binder has a rotational viscosity at 135&#xb0; C. equal to or less than 1000 centipoise, an original G*/sin &#x3b4; at 64&#xb0; C. equal to or greater than 1 kPa where G* is the complex shear modulus and &#x3b4; is the phase angle; a G*/sin &#x3b4; at 64&#xb0; C. equal to or greater than 2.2 kPa after aging in a Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO); b) providing a virgin asphalt; c) heating the virgin asphalt to 160-200&#xb0; C.; d) providing a RAP and/or RAS; and e) mixing the heated virgin asphalt, RAP/RAS, and the rejuvenated asphalt binder under conditions suitable to form the paving composition.

Reclaimed asphalt composition and methods of making and using same

A coupled block copolymer composition with a combination of high viscosity at manufacturing, finishing and handling conditions, low viscosity at asphalt blending conditions and suitable viscosity stability is provided for use in asphalt compositions. The composition comprises: (i) a diblock copolymer, (ii) at least a linear triblock copolymer having a peak molecular weight that is 1.5 to 3.0 times the peak molecular weight of the diblock copolymer, and (iii) at least a multiarm coupled block copolymer having a peak molecular weight that is 1.5 to 9.0 times the peak molecular weight of the diblock copolymer, and mixtures thereof. The block copolymer composition is characterized as having a melt viscosity at 110&#xb0; C. or less of greater than 2.0E7 Poise and a coupling efficiency after 24 hours at 180&#xb0; C. is less than 25%.

Asphalt compositions and methods of making same

A styrenic triblock copolymer composition with a combination of excellent tensile strength and high melt index, excellent for manufacturing, finishing and handling, forming stable pellets, for use in applications including but not limited to adhesive, coating, and flexographic printing. The composition comprises a first block which is a polymer of a monoalkenyl arene; a second block which is polymer of a conjugated diene and a third block which is a polymer of a monoalkenyl arene wherein a peak molecular weight of the third block is from about 0.06 to about 0.4 times that of the first block.

Highly asymmetric triblock polymer compositions and methods of making same

The present invention is an asphalt rejuvenator made from a specific styrenic block copolymer, bio-based oil or a bio-based oil blend, and an antioxidant system. The bio-based oil or a bio-based oil blend has a flash point of &#x3e;230&#xb0; C., and the asphalt rejuvenator has a maximum viscosity of &#x3c;2000 cP at 180&#xb0; C. when measured at 6.8/seconds shear rate. An alternate embodiment of the present invention is a pavement composition of RAP and/or RAS, asphalt rejuvenator, and virgin asphalt with and without a crosslinker. Lastly, the invention includes a method of making an asphalt rejuvenator composition referred to above, and blending it with RAP and fresh asphalt. An emulsion is also described and claimed comprising asphalt rejuvenator, water and an emulsifier.

Oil gel for asphalt modification and rejuvenation

The present invention is directed to bituminous emulsions comprising bitumen, water, one or more emulsifiers systems and a diblock copolymer including one block of a monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon and one block of a conjugated diene, wherein the conjugated diene has a peak molecular weight from 30,000 to 78,000 and a vinyl content from 35 to 80 mol percent based on the number of repeat monomer units in the conjugated diene block. A block copolymer comprising at least two blocks of monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon and at least one block of conjugated diene, the block copolymer selected from linear triblock copolymers having a peak molecular weight that is 1.5 to 3.0 times the peak molecular weight of the diblock copolymer, multiarm coupled block copolymers having a peak molecular weight that is 1.5 to 9.0 times the peak molecular weight of the diblock copolymer, and mixtures thereof, wherein each block copolymer has a vinyl content from 35 to 80 mol percent based on the number of repeat monomer units in the conjugated diene block, wherein the ratio of (i) to (ii) in the block copolymer composition is greater than 1:1.

Bituminous emulsions

A block copolymer composition including a diblock copolymer (I) having one block of a monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon and one block of a conjugated diene having a peak molecular weight from 30,000 to 78,000 and one or more block copolymers (ii) comprising at least two blocks of monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon and at least one block of conjugated diene, the block copolymer selected from linear triblock copolymers having a peak molecular weight that is 1.5 to 9.0 times the peak molecular weight of the diblock copolymer, and mixtures thereof, wherein the ratio of (i) to (ii) is greater than 1:1.

Process for preparing a bituminous binder composition

The present invention is directed to a process for preparing a polymer modified bituminous binder composition in the substantial absence of crosslinking agents by heating a bitumen component in a stirred tank to a temperature from 160&#xb0; C. to 221&#xb0; C.; adding a block copolymer composition to the bitumen component while the bitumen component is being stirred to form a homogeneous mixture of the bitumen component and the block copolymer composition; and continuing to stir the homogeneous mixture while maintaining the temperature from 180&#xb0; C. to 221&#xb0; C. for a total period of time from 4 hours to 30 hours thereby forming a cured polymer modified bituminous binder composition. The block copolymer composition utilized in the process comprises one or more block copolymers having at least one monovinylaromatic block and either (I) at least one polybutadiene block having a vinyl content of less than 15 mol percent and at least one polybutadiene block having a vinyl content of greater than 25 mol percent or (II) at least one polybutadiene block having a vinyl content that tapers from a vinyl content of less than 15 mol percent at the first end adjacent to the monovinylaromatic block to a vinyl content that is greater than 25 mol percent at the second end which is furthest from the monovinylaromatic block and optionally at least one polybutadiene block having a vinyl content of less than 15 mol percent. The present invention is further related to an alternative to this process, a specific class of bituminous binder compositions and concentrates and a specific class of block copolymer compositions.

Bituminous binder composition and process for preparing the same

The present invention is directed to a process for preparing a polymer modified bituminous binder composition in the substantial absence of crosslinking agents by heating a bitumen component in a stirred tank to a temperature from 185&#xb0; C. to 221&#xb0; C.; adding a block copolymer composition to the bitumen component while the bitumen component is being stirred to form a homogeneous mixture of the bitumen component and the block copolymer composition; and continuing to stir the homogeneous mixture while maintaining the temperature from 185&#xb0; C. to 221&#xb0; C. for a period of time from 4 hours to 30 hours thereby forming a cured polymer modified bituminous binder composition. The block copolymer composition utilized in the process comprises a diblock copolymer comprising one block of a monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon and one block of a conjugated diene having a peak molecular weight from 30,000 to 78,000 and a vinyl content from 35 to 80 mol percent based on the number of repeat monomer units in the conjugated diene block, and optionally one or more block copolymers comprising at least two blocks of monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon and at least one block of conjugated diene, the block copolymer selected from linear triblock copolymers having a peak molecular weight that is 1.5 to 3.0 times the peak molecular weight of the diblock copolymer, multiarm coupled block copolymers having a peak molecular weight that is 1.5 to 9.0 times the peak molecular weight of the diblock copolymer, and mixtures thereof, wherein each block copolymer has a vinyl content from 35 to 80 mol percent based on the number of repeat monomer units in the conjugated diene block, wherein when both (i) and (ii) are present in the block copolymer composition, the ratio of (i) to (ii) is greater than 1:1. The present invention is further related to an alternative to this process, a specific class of bituminous binder compositions and concentrates and a specific class of block copolymer compositions.

A process for preparing compatible, selectively hydrogenated block copolymer-modified bituminous compositions comprising blowing a mixture of the block copolymer and bitumen with an oxidizing gas at temperatures of at least 375&#xb0; C. for at least 75 minutes. The modifying polymer is a selectively hydrogenated styrenic block copolymer and no blowing catalyst is required. Stable bituminous compositions comprising 6 to 25 parts by weight of block copolymer per 100 parts of asphalt are also provided as well as their application as roofing shingles.

Blown asphalt compositions

The present invention is a polymer modified bituminous composition having improved phase stability, heat aging and viscosity characteristics. The bituminous compositions are blends comprising bitumen and from about 0.5 to about 25% of a novel anionic block copolymer where one of the blocks is a controlled distribution copolymer of a conjugated diene and a mono-alkenyl arene having a specific arrangement of the monomers in the copolymer block. The composition of the invention is useful for paving, roofing felts, water-proof membrane, adhesive, mopping asphalt, carpet backing and pipe coating applications.

Polymer modified bitumen compositions

An oil-free compound which comprises from 20 to 90% by weight of a block copolymer of a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and a conjugated diene optionally hydrogenated, from 10 to 70% by weight of a low viscosity amorphous polyolefin, and from 0.1 to 20% by weight of carbon black. A stable oil-free bituminous composition which comprises from 80 to 98% by weight of a bituminous component, from 2 to 20% by weight of the above compound. A membrane suitable for single ply roofing prepared from the above compound.

The present invention provides a roofing shingle which is comprised of a support material and a bituminous composition which comprises a bitumen component, less than 15% by weight of a block copolymer composition, based on total weight of block copolymer composition and bitumen component, and more than 40% by weight of a filler, based on total weight of block copolymer, bitumen component and filler, which block copolymer composition comprises at least one block of a conjugated diene and at least two blocks of a monovinylaromatic hydrocarbon, wherein the block copolymer composition has a vinyl content of at least 25% by weight based on the total diene content and optionally a diblock content of 25 wt % or less, and any diblock copolymer present has an apparent molecular weight which is in the range of from 60,000 to 170,000.

Asphalt composition with improved processability

An asphalt blend is presented in which asphalt is blended with a phenolic tar. The phenolic tar is primarily cumyl phenol and phenolic materials having a molecular weight of between about 300 and 1000. The tar is obtained as the bottoms product of a phenol heavy ends separation process and may also include phenol and acetophenone. A process for preparing this blend is also presented.
