A wriggler device is provided for a gas meter endpoint or gas meter index as an interface with a gas meter drive mechanism. In general, the wriggler may include a base surface, at least one interface wall, and at least one guide wall. The base surface has a peripheral edge and a center point. The interface wall extends at an interface angle from the base surface, and may have an interface surface and a tip portion, with the tip portion spaced from the base surface. The at least one guide wall may extend between the base surface and the tip portion, and may have a guide surface. The guide wall may be configured to guide the drive mechanism along the guide surface to the base surface. Engagement of the interface surface by the drive mechanism causes the wriggler to rotate.

An automated meter reader module can be operably connected to an existing utility meter to provide an endpoint for use in an automated meter reader system. The automated meter reader module can utilize an index attachment drive mechanism to electronically and mechanically monitor consumption of a utility such as water, gas, or electricity. The index attachment of the existing utility meter is attached so that it does not physically impede reception or transmission of radio frequency communications by a patch antenna integrated into a printed circuit board located inside the automated meter reader module. A gasket around the edge of the housing sealingly interfaces with the existing utility meter and a multi-faced cover that allows the registered dials located on the index attached to be viewed from a plurality of vantage points.

Moisture-resistant electronic enclosures and methods of enclosing and isolating an electronic metering device are disclosed. The electronic enclosure can be adapted for metering devices, such as in automatic meter reading and other consumption measuring application, and includes a double-wall, isolated configuration. The apparatus and method of the invention thereby protect metering or other electronic components from moisture, dust, and other environmental debris.

A radio frequency (RF) antenna of the present invention generally comprises an electrical conductor and a unitary metallic surface mounting structure. The electrical conductor, which performs the radiator function, is secured to the surface mounting structure so that the electrical conductor may use the surface mounting structure not only as a surface mount but additionally as a ground plane. The surface mounting structure is presented in a cross-configuration having outward extending arms. The arms perform the ground plane function and are bent to a desired angle to produce a desired radiation pattern and/or impedance. A plastic radome with a metallic insert is preferably used to cover the electrical conductor and to secure the electrical conductor to the surface mounting structure.
