Improved cooling is achieved in a cooking appliance having a burner box including an air inlet and at least one burner assembly disposed therein. A control box containing control electronics is located adjacent to the burner box. The control box is provided with an air inlet and an air outlet for permitting a flow of cooling air therethrough. Also provided is a fan for causing cooling air to pass through the control box. The burner box air inlet is positioned so that cooling air exiting the control box via the control box outlet enters the burner box via the burner box inlet. In one preferred embodiment, an inner box is disposed in the burner box so as to define a compartment into which the cooling air flows.

Improved cooling is achieved in a cooking appliance including a burner box having at least one burner assembly disposed therein. A control box containing control electronics is spaced below the burner box so that a gap is created between the burner box and the control box. A plurality of fins is formed on at least one wall of the control box for cooling the control electronics by natural convection.

A fuel injector is cooled by steam during operation of a combustor. The injector includes a conduit for channeling fuel into the combustor, and a jacket covering the conduit through which steam is channeled for cooling the injector. The steam may be mixed with the fuel, or kept apart from the fuel in the injector by flowing through passageways in the jacket. Cooling can be further improved by expanding the steam through an orifice prior to entry into the injector.

Methods of making gas turbine structures with cooling channels, such as, for example, combustor/transition pieces for gas turbines having a double wall with a plurality of cooling channels, having axially and/or circumferential cross-flow passages positioned between the structure's inner member and the outer member to provide cooling air thereto, are disclosed. A representative method of producing such annular structures having a hot and a cold wall, and joining ribs, for the inner and the outer components of an annulus, such as for jet engine turbine combustors, to net shape as an annular pre-form includes: forming a pre-form assembly including materials for the hot wall, cold wall, and ribs and sacrificial segments for maintaining cooling channels during forming of the pre-assembly and later processing; rolling the pre-form to a required thickness and length as a flat pre-form; hoop-rolling the preform to a required thickness and a required length; welding the assembly; ring rolling to the pre-form to a desired inner diameter; ring-rolling or metal spinning the pre-form to produce the proper wall contour and removing the sacrificial material to open the cooling channels.

Method of making double-walled turbine components from pre-consolidated

A method of superficial laser induced fluorescence for measuring film cooling performance within a fluid tunnel apparatus includes the step of introducing a test fluid uniformly dyed with a fluorescent dye into the fluid tunnel apparatus so as to surround a cooling model having a test geometry. The cooling model is positioned adjacent to a laser sheet. A background fluorescent image of the test fluid about the cooling model is recorded. The test fluid is then flushed from the tunnel apparatus. Next, a cooling simulation fluid flow and a hot gas simulation flow are introduced within the fluid tunnel apparatus. The cooling simulation fluid contains the same fluorescent dye concentration as the test fluid and the hot gas simulation fluid contains no fluorescent dye. A data image of the cooling simulation fluid flow is recorded about the cooling model as the cooling simulation fluid flow passes through the cooling model and into the hot gas simulation fluid flow. Finally, the data image is corrected using the background fluorescent image so as to determine superficial flow characteristics of the cooling simulation fluid flow passing through the cooling model.

A combustor/transition piece for a gas turbine including a double walled structure having a plurality of cooling channels, both axially and, in some cases, circumferential cross-flow passages positioned between the structure's inner member and the outer member to provide cooling air thereto, are formed in the area between the inner member of the combustor and the outer member thereof. The passages preferably extend both axially and circumferentially with respect to the direction of flow through the combustor/transition piece. The axial passages extend completely from one end to the other and the circumferential passages extend around the circumference of the combustor/transition piece. The addition of a circumferential cross-flow passage connecting axial flow coolant passages in double wall turbine components can prevent combustor/transition piece part failure due to axial passage inlet blockage without affecting normal, unblocked cooling. Double wall cooling structures are constructed using two unbonded members. The inner member is machined to form cooling passages. Differential thermal expansion (expansion of the outside diameter of the hot inner wall until contact is established with the inside diameter of the cooler outer wall) keeps the cylinders held tightly together. Double wall cooling structures are also constructed using two members shrink-fitted and then bonded together such as by welding. The inner member is machined to form the cooling passages. The improved thermal contact between the outer and inner members due to the joint reduces the thermally induced stresses in the two members.
