A display system includes a printed display formed on a substrate and a printed battery in electrical communication with the printed display. The printed display provides power to the printed display. Since both the display and battery are printed, the resulting display system is extremely thin and the manufacture thereof is reliable and inexpensive. The display system contemplates various types of printed displays such as an electrochromic display, a thermochromic display, an electroluminescent display, or an electrophoretic display.

Printed display and battery

A device for indicating the conducting state of a fuse includes a heat generating material for generating heat in response to an electrical input and adapted to be coupled electrically in parallel with a fuse, and a temperature responsive material thermally coupled to the heat generating material for providing a visually discernable response if heated above a threshold temperature by the heat generating material.

Printed electrochemical display cells are arranged in layer form with two electrode layers and an electrolyte layer occupying distinct areas of a substrate. An electrolyte layer overlaps most of one electrode layer but contacts a smaller portion of the other electrode layer, which is made of a thin film. When activated, an electrochemical reaction progressively increases the area occupied by the electrolyte layer and progressively decreases the area occupied by the thin-film electrode layer. The thin-film electrode layer recedes at a boundary in common with the electrolyte layer and provides an irreversible indication of change at a rate governed by the electrochemical reaction.

An electrochemical display cell has a layered construction including two electrode layers separated by a dielectric layer. Concentric openings are formed in the dielectric layer and one of the electrode layers exposing a designated portion of the other electrode layer. An electrolyte layer overlaps the one electrode layer and the designated portion of the other electrode layer. When activated, current flow cascades through the openings in the one electrode layer and the dielectric layer to the designated portion of the other electrode layer supporting an electrochemical reaction that erodes the designated portion revealing underlying visual information.

A device for measuring the voltage of a voltage source includes a number of temperature responsive displays and a circuit including a number of heating circuits, each heating circuit for heating one of the temperature responsive displays when a threshold voltage of the heating circuit is exceeded, and a printed resistor, each heating circuit being connected to a length of the printed resistor such that the voltage of the voltage source at which each heating circuit heats a temperature responsive display is a function of the ratio of the lengths of the printed resistor to which the heating circuits are connected.

A testing device includes a refresh circuit having a refresh resistor and electrically conductive leads for coupling the refresh resistor to a battery through a first switch and a diode, a test circuit including a heat generating element and electrically conductive leads for coupling the heat generating element to the battery through a second switch and the diode, a refresh display coupled to the refresh circuit for a visual indication that the device is in a refresh mode, and a test display thermally coupled to the heat generating element for visual display of the relative charge of the battery.

Device for testing and refreshing batteries

A thermochromic apparatus for testing dc voltage sources, particularly small, low voltage disposable batteries, employs a very thin resistive heater layer deposited onto a flexible dielectric substrate. A series of thermochromic elements are 'stacked' (mounted on top of one another) at a single thermochromic site proximate the resistive heater. During testing current from the battery flows through the resistive layer heats the substrate, causing a series of thermochromic elements mounted on the substrate to undergo visual 'temperature events' (such as color changes) at progressively higher temperatures. The thermochromics may be stacked in a series of discrete films, each film containing a dye for one temperature event. Alternatively, the thermochromics may be contained in microcapsules in a common film.

A temperature responsive tester for measuring the voltage of a voltage source includes a temperature responsive display and an electrical element thermally coupled with the temperature responsive display for heating the temperature responsive display when a voltage exceeding a predetermined threshold level is impressed across the electrical element. Other embodiments of a voltage tester are disclosed.

A temperature indicator for indicating the temperature condition of an object while subjecting the object to an external temperature environment. The temperature indicator includes a substantially transparent outer shell containing a substantially transport modeling structure, which includes a plurality of heat receiving elements, for modeling the thermal diffusivity of the object. The indicator also includes a temperature measuring device in thermal contact with the modeling structure for measuring the temperature within the outer shell to thereby indicate the temperature condition of the object. The outer shell including first and second sections which apply a compressive force to the modeling structure when the first and second sections are secured together to thereby confine the modeling structure within the outer shell.

A thermochromic level indicator for determining the level of a material inside a container includes a temperature responsive strip including at least two thermochromic materials of different opacities and transition temperatures, the thermochromic materials with greater opacity having relatively lower transition temperatures than the thermochromic materials with lesser opacities. Other accurate thermochromic level indicators are also disclosed.
