A method, system, and computer program product for database application migration. The method commences upon executing a foreign application, the foreign application emits SQL statements of a foreign SQL dialect that is incompatible with the SQL dialect of a native database system. The system configures a communication session to intercept the foreign SQL statements before the foreign SQL statements are received by the SQL parser of the native database system; and, while the foreign application is waiting for query results, the system translates the foreign dialect query statements into native SQL compatible with the native database system. The method further performs translating a return code from the native database system into a return code compatible with the foreign application. Configuring the database session connection comprises establishing a translation profile to translate foreign dialect SQL into native SQL, and to translate native SQL query return codes into foreign dialect return codes.

Run-time SQL language translation

A web server configured to respond to client requests over a network such as the World Wide Web includes a web listener having a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) daemon, a plurality of extension programs configured to perform respective operations, and a web request broker configured to identify one of the programs for responding to a client request, and determine the availability of an instance of the identified program. The web request broker maintains control of multiple instances of each server extension program to provide enhanced server operation without overwhelming server resources. The web request broker maintains a minimum number of instances of the identified program in memory, each executed in its own address space. The web request broker determines whether an available instance of the identified program is available from an existing number of instances, and selectively initiates a new instance of the program if no other instance is available. If no instance is available and the existing number of instances exceeds the maximum prescribed number, then the web request broker returns the reply to the web listener to send a reply over the network that the request was not processed.

A highly scalable, flexible, and extensible mechanism is provided for authenticating a request from a client. In a preferred embodiment, the invention comprises an authentication engine, an authentication host, a plurality of providers coupled to the host which implement selected authentication schemes, and a machine independent communication mechanism which enables the various components to communicate with each other irregardless of the machine each component resides on. The communication mechanism enables the invention to be distributed, which in turn, makes the invention highly scalable. In operation, the authentication engine receives a request having associated therewith a protect string. The protect string specifies the authentication scheme or schemes that need to be implemented for that request. The authentication engine parses the protect string into one or more provider requests, and sends the requests to the authentication host. In response, the host forwards the requests to the appropriate providers for processing. The results of the providers' processing are sent back to the authentication engine, which then processes the results according to the protect string to determine whether the request has been authenticated. With the present invention, it is possible to add providers to the system, or to substitute a new provider for an existing provider, without changing or recompiling any other component in the system. It is also possible to change the authentication schemes associated with a request by simply changing the protect string. These aspects of the invention make it possible to change implementation at deployment time, as opposed to compile time. This makes the invention highly flexible and extensible.
