An electron gun having arc suppression means is described. In one of the preferred embodiments of the electron gun, at least one cathode is provided for generating an electron beam along a beam path. A plurality of electrodes are serially disposed along the beam path. The electrodes include at least one low voltage electrode and at least one high voltage electrode. A plurality of resistors interconnect selected ones of the electrodes. The interconnected electrodes normally operate at substantially the same voltage, and the resistors act as a voltage divider in the event of an arc and prevent damaging cascading arcs.

Electron gun having arc suppression means

An electron gun comprises at least one cathode for generating an electron beam along a beam path and a plurality of electrodes serially disposed along the beam path. The electrodes include at least one accelerating and focusing electrode having two spaced-apart electrode sections axially separated along a plane substantially perpendicular to the beam path. An arc-suppression resistor interconnects the spaced-apart electrode sections of the electrode. The interconnected electrode sections normally operate at substantially the same voltage. The arc-suppression resistor acts in the event of an arc to limit the arc current and prevent damaging cascading arcs.

Arc-suppression means for an electron gun having a split electrode

An improvement is provided in an apertured mask type color picture tube having a substantially flat faceplate, a cathodoluminescent screen on the faceplate, a corrugated apertured mask adjacent the screen and electron gun means for producing and directing a plurality of electron beams through the mask to impinge upon the screen. The mask corrugations are substantially parallel and extend in a first direction with the varying corrugated waveform extending in a second direction. The mask includes an aperture width and/or an aperture-to-aperture spacing variation in the second direction which is a function of mask-to-screen spacing. The improvement comprises a further variation in aperture width and/or aperture-to-aperture spacing which is a function of (a) deflection angle of the electron beams, (b) the angle in a horizontal plane between tangents to the mask surface and a central contour through the mask, and (c) the angle in a horizontal plane between a tangent to the mask central contour and a plane perpendicular to the tube central longitudinal axis. In an additional improvement, aperture width also is varied because of the effective mask thickness or aperture step height.

Color picture tube having improved corrugated mask

The tube includes an improved shadow mask contoured with step risers therein separating active portions of the mask. The risers are aligned with electron beam paths within the tube.

Cathode-ray tube having a stepped shadow mask

In an electron gun assembly comprising at least one oxide coated cathode and a G1 grid, a method of spacing the cathode a predetermined distance from the G1 grid includes the following steps. First, the cathode oxide coating is moistened with water causing it to become electrically conductive. Next an ohmmeter is connected to indicate the electrical resistance between the electrically conductive oxide coating and the G1 grid. The spacing between the cathode and the G1 grid is then reduced until the ohmmeter indicates that there is electrical conductivity therebetween. At this point there is zero spacing between the cathode and the G1 grid. The spacing between the cathode and the G1 grid is then increased by an amount equal to the predetermined spacing. The cathode is then permanently fixed at the predetermined spacing with respect to the G1 grid.
