An apparatus and a method of optimizing voice quality on a network having end-points that are voice over Internet Protocol (IP) devices. Default parameters of the end-points are initialized. Network performance parameters are measured and evaluated to determine whether they signify that connection to the network is below a desired level of operation. If so, the default parameters of the end-points are re-set based on the evaluation. The adjustment may entail re-negotiating the CODEC connection and re-setting parameters for packet size and resetting parameters for jitter buffer size.

Voice optimization in a network having voice over the internet protocol communication devices

The invention provides a key system unit comprising a first interface suitable for connection to a plurality of local terminals and a control unit coupled to the first interface. The control unit is operative for receiving a user data signal from the first interface and routing the user data signal toward a selected destination. The control unit has a registry for storing status information, the status information including a local segment and at least one remote segment, the local segment providing a representation of the functional status of the key system unit, the remote segment providing a representation of the functional status of a remote key system unit. The information in the registry can be displayed on a display screen on a local terminal to provide the user with system status information on the local key system unit and the remote key system unit.

Method and apparatus allowing remote key system units to interoperate

The invention relates to methods and apparatus for wireless multi-site networking using signaling and voice over Internet protocol. The apparatus includes a wireless portable terminal, a controller for controlling communications equipment, wireless base stations, a computer network, and signaling devices. The wireless portable terminal is registered to a home controller when within a home coverage area, and the wireless portable terminal is registered with a remote controller when within a remote coverage area, thereby allowing the wireless portable terminal to roam from the home location to the remote location using a home wireless base station and remote wireless base stations, respectively, with the ability to make and receive calls via its home directory number.

Wireless multi-site networking using signaling and voice-over-IP

During the occurrence of an incoming call to a portable handset within an in building telephone system, a method is disclosed for providing additional information about the calling party, beyond simply their name or number, to a display on the handset. The name or number of the calling party is extracted by a central switching controller and is used as a reference in the look up of additional calling party attributes from a database located within a personal computer connected to the central switching controller. If the name or number of the calling party is found in the database, a data session is started between the called handset and the database. Following the starting of the data session, the first attribute in the database for the calling party is written to the display of the called handset and additional attributes are offered to the user. The incoming voice call is also offered to the display and a call acceptance signal from the called handset results in the establishing of a voice communication connection between the handset and the calling party. The offering of additional attributes for the calling party continues after the establishing of the voice communication connection between the called handset and the calling party.

Apparatus and method for displaying caller attributes

During the occurrence of an incoming voice call to a portable telephone handset within an in building telephone system, a method is disclosed for offering the voice call while the called handset is in a data session with an application. In such a case, the data session is interrupted and the handset display and softkey information is saved to memory. The name or number of the calling party is then written to the display of the called handset while the incoming call is offered to the user. A call acceptance signal from the called handset results in the establishing of a voice communication connection between the handset and the calling party. Independent of whether the incoming call is accepted or rejected by the user of the called handset, the saved display and softkey information is restored to the called handset and the data session is resumed between the portable handset and the application once the selection is made.
