Blades with tungsten carbide cutting edges have a surface at a relief angle and a surface at a reverse angle at the periphery. A smooth crown is provided at the intersection of the surfaces. The crown will contact and be included within an overlap of a cooperating offset steel blade. The relief angle may be between about 1 and 3 degrees and the reverse angle about 1/4 to 1 degree. The crown may have a finish of about 2-6 micro-inches. The contact between the blades during operation provides a polishing or self-sharpening effect. The tungsten carbide blades are used in rotating shear wheel devices and scissor cutting devices to cut tire cord fabric.

A rotary carbide drill for drilling clean holes in aramid fiber composites is made from a cylindrical rod having a planar elliptical end surface. The drill has a longitudinally extending arcuate flute that becomes shallower as it progresses away from the end surface. The arcuate flute is generated with a diamond wheel or disc having a periphery with a semi-cylindrical cross-section in a manner so that each of two radial segments alternate as the lead cutting surfaces, providing essentially equal wear on the segments so that frequent dressing of the wheel is eliminated.

A method and apparatus for cutting pattern shaped holes in glass sheets is disclosed in which a pair of continuous parallel lines are scored on the upper surface of a glass sheet in horizontal orientation so that the outermost score line defines the periphery of the pattern hole. A pair of templates having opening coincidental but smaller than the pattern hole is clamped on both the upper and lower surfaces of the glass sheet so that the outermost score line is located between the clamped plates while the innermost score line is exposed. A force is applied to the exposed area of the glass sheet to remove the glass from the pattern hole. The glass severs at both the inner and outer score lines to produce the pattern shaped hole. Breakout is additionally assisted by thermal gradients introduced in the glass sheet by applying opposing moments to the glass.

Method and apparatus for cutting pattern shaped holes in glass sheets

A subsurface score is imposed in one surface of a glass ribbon at the bulb edge and an open score imposed in the opposite surface aligned with the subsurface score. The ribbon is cut into lehr ends after which bending moment forces are applied about the scores to propagate the open score toward the subsurface score to sever the bulb edge from the ribbon to provide a glass sheet having substantially smooth cut edges.

An automotive window is manufactured by silk screening a pattern of a ceramic paste on a piece of glass having peripheral dimensions greater than the peripheral dimensions of the window. During the silk screening, portions of the screen extending beyond the pattern are supported by glass portions extending beyond the window to prevent bending of the screen near the pattern. The piece is scored through the pattern to define the window or a window blank within the piece and thereafter the glass around the window is removed. The window is then tempered at which time the ceramic paste fuses to the window.

An apparatus for scoring a glass sheet includes a scoring wheel rotatably mounted to one end of a shaft mounted in a rod end ball joint and a spring acting on the other end of the shaft to urge the wheel toward a sheet movement path under a predetermined force. The glass sheet is advanced along the path under the scoring wheel to urge the scoring wheel against the biasing action of the spring. The axis of the scoring wheel is aligned in a plane normal and transverse to the movement path by the motion of the glass sheet as it advances under the scoring wheel.

A wheel blank having an angled peripheral surface is mounted on a dead spindle. The angled surface is biased against a felt pad having polishing compound to shape an arcuate scoring surface on the wheel blank.

Intersecting first and second scores in a glass sheet are simultaneously opened by imposing deeper first scores in the glass sheet than second scores. A bending moment force applied to a second score opens the second score and the resulting shock from opening the second score opens portions of the intersecting first scores.

A method of maintaining edge strength of a piece of glass i.e. preventing unintentional damage such as chips and/or scratches to the edges of the piece of glass during handling, processing and/or shipping is disclosed. A sheet of glass having dimensions greater than the desired size of the piece of glass is cut from a glass ribbon. The sheet of glass is pseudosubsurface scored or subsurface scored within the edges to define the piece of glass and to provide trim around the piece of glass which trim protects the edges of the piece of glass against unintentional damage. Thereafter, the sheet of glass is stored or processed, e.g., coating a surface of the sheet of glass with a transparent metal coating. The trim is removed from the sheet of glass at a fabrication station and the piece of glass having edges free of unintentional damage is used in the fabrication of a product e.g., a multiple glazed unit.

Score lines or fracture lines in a glass sheet are opened by advancing the glass sheet along an article movement path into a snapping station with the score lines to be opened extending between the leading and trailing edge of the sheet as it moves along the article movement path. A moving bending moment is applied to the glass sheet along a path transverse to the article movement path. In one embodiment, the bending moment is applied to the glass sheet by a pair of spaced rotatably mounted wheels urging the sheet in a first direction as a rotatably mounted wheel urges the sheet in a second opposite direction.

Self-aligning apparatus for scoring fracturable material

An endless belt moves a glass sheet having lateral scores along a movement path having a receiving horizontal path portion and a downwardly inclined or sloping path portion. As the leading edge of the glass sheet advances toward the end of the horizontal path section, it moves under a pinch roll. Continued movement of the sheet advances the leading edge under a snap roll spaced above the inclined path portion. The snap roll applies a downward force to the sheet to open a lateral score between the pinch roll and the snap roll. The severed glass drops onto the inclined path portion and is conveyed along the inclined path portion.
