A knife edge enhancing apparatus includes a support having a support surface and knife blade clamping structure mounted to the support and located above the support surface. An object having a knife edge modifying surface which could be abrasive or non-abrasive is mounted to a holder which is freely slidable on the support surface so that the object surface can be manually moved into contact with a knife edge facet. At least one of the clamping structure and the object surface is angularly adjustable to control the angle of contact of the object surface with the knife edge facet.

Apparatus for precision steeling/conditioning of knife edges

An apparatus for manually steeling or conditioning the edge of a knife blade comprises a precision angle guide attached to a manual sharpening steel. The angle guide establishes a guiding surface that provides for sustained sliding or rolling contact with the face of the knife blade such that the plane of at least one edge facet adjacent to the edge of the blade is maintained at a precisely established angle relative to the plane of the sharpening steel surface at the contact point of the facet with the surface of the sharpening steel.

A multi-stage sharpener includes at least one motor driven abrasive sharpening stage and one non-motor driven conditioning stage. The conditioning stage has a non-abrasive hardened surface and at least one precision knife guide which has a planar guide surface for creating a microscopic serration along the edge of a blade which had been sharpened in the first stage sharpening station. The sharpener may also include a third stage motor driven finishing stage. Alternatively, the conditioning stage can be incorporated as the knife edge modifying stage of a manual sharpener.

A knife-edge conditioning apparatus comprises at least one precision angled knife guide with one face of the knife blade maintained in sustained sliding or rolling contact and which guides the elongated edge of the blade into sustained contact with the hardened surface of an object and positions the plane of the adjacent edge facet at a precise predetermined angle relative to the contact plane of the hardened surface made of a material of equal or greater hardness than the metal of the knife blade without any tendency to abrade as the blade face is moved along the guide with its elongated edge in sustained contact with the hardened surface.

Electric knife sharpener

A versatile ultrahoned sharpener includes a stop assembly which contains an inner hardened structure such as being made from metal or ceramic to serve as a positive limiting stop if the knife being sharpened cuts excessively into the plastic stop assembly of the sharpener. The sharpener also includes a manually actuated abrasive surfaced unit for cleaning or shaping the surface of at least one of the sharpening wheels in the sharpener. The sharpener further includes various bearing structures for effectively mounting the motor driven shaft which rotates the abrasive coated disks of the sharpener.

Versatile ultrahone sharpener

An abrasive material contains abrasive particles in the range of 50 to 80% by weight in an olefinic thermalplastic resin system which is based on ethylene copolymer. The material may be incorporated on a substrate structure to be used as a stropping or honing material or may be shaped by an injection molding process or may be injection molded over a rigid insert or molded over a rigid wheel or disk inserted in the mold. The material may be used for polishing and finishing of crystalline materials, ceramics, silicon and semi-conductor wafers.

Sharpening apparatus

A high speed knife sharpening apparatus where the surface of a first rotating abrasive element is that of a truncated cone and forms a first facet with microgrooves and a microburr. A second stage is a novel composite cone shaped honing wheel made up of a micro abrasive imbedded in an epoxy matrix. The honing wheel refines the edge developed in the first stage, into an erect triangular shape with a radius of curvature, at the apex (edge), of typically several microns or less depending on the hardness of the knife steel. A unique blade holding system constrains the blade to a precisely defined angle relative to each of the grinding (first) and honing (second) stages. Proportionately larger grinding forces are developed for thicker knife blades, thus sharpening times are approximately the same over the common range of knives from small paring knives (6'), large chef's knives (10') up to kitchen cleavers.

High speed precision sharpening apparatus

A scissors sharpening apparatus includes a motor driven sharpening member having an abrasive surface. A magnetic guide is arranged to position the scissors blade at a fixed angle relative to the principle plane of the abrasive surface in such a manner that the magnet of the guide has the axis of its poles oriented nominally perpendicular to the flat face of the blade and nominally parallel to the principle plane of the abrasive surface.
