A system for providing telematics to a vehicle includes an integrated communication device having a list with mobile communication devices and periodically sending at least a portion of the list including a phone number of a currently paired mobile device. A telematics component communicates with the integrated device and has a data pump sending out information and/or requests for information and receives and sends the list portion. An off-site telematics information provider receives the information and/or requests and the list portion. When the information or the request for information is received, the integrated device and/or the provider decides whether to send a response and, if sending the response, where to send a response and what to send as the response. When the response is sent, the integrated device and/or the provider automatically sends the response to the data pump for use by the telematics component at the vehicle.

Flexible telematics system and method for providing telematics to a vehicle

A method for providing telematics to a vehicle comprises providing a telematics unit with a Global Positioning System device, a data pump, and a short range wireless personal area network transceiver, communicatively connecting the telematics unit to an integrated communication device of the vehicle, the integrated communication device having a memory holding a list uniquely identifying at least one mobile communication device selected from a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and a pre-defined mobile communication device, transmitting an alert out from the telematics unit to an off-site telematics provider utilizing a communications path of the data pump, and receiving a channeled response to the alert from the off-site telematics provider automatically through the at least one mobile communication device.

A system for allocating communications resources for telematics communications includes a service provider, a gateway, a currently paired mobile device having at least first and second communications channels through which communication occurs to the service provider, sensing speed or acceleration of the mobile device based on internal data, detecting changes in speed or acceleration based upon the internal data, and determining that an event notification is to be sent to the service provider based upon the detected change in the speed or acceleration. A telematics device has at least a third communications channel through which communication occurs to the service provider. The telematics device and/or the mobile device determines which of the first, second, and third communications channels is to be used to communicate to the service provider and the respective one of the telematics device and the mobile device sends the event notification to the service provider.

Communication systems and methods for flexible telematics at a vehicle

With a telematics system comprising a telematics unit, a mobile device of the user, and an integrated communication device of a vehicle, a method for providing information to a user of a telematics system includes receiving an event call at the telematics unit and, in response to the event call, sending a first message from the telematics unit to at least one of the mobile device of the user and the integrated communication device of the vehicle and sending a second message from the telematics unit to a telematics provider over a communications channel, the second message causing the telematics provider to communicate with at least one of the mobile device of the user and a mobile device of a third party.

A system for allocating communications resources for telematics communications is provided. The system includes a service provider, a gateway, and a telematics device. The telematics device: initiates a telematics communication between the telematics device and the service provider via a network; determines whether a network resource allocation for the telematics communication is still required based upon user intent information; and sends a notification of a change in the network resource allocation via a secondary communication channel. The secondary communication channel can be one of a first link coupled to the gateway and a second link coupled to the telematics device.

A system for providing telematics to a vehicle is provided. The system includes an integrated communication device of the vehicle having a memory holding a list uniquely identifying at least one mobile communication device. The system includes a telematics component that is communicatively connected to the integrated communication device of the vehicle and has a data pump that sends out a request for information. An off-site telematics information provider receives a request for information from the telematics component utilizing a communications path between the data pump of the telematics component and the off-site telematics information provider. The at least one mobile communication device automatically receives a channeled response to the request for information from the off-site telematics information provider when connected to the integrated communication device.

A method for providing telematics to a vehicle includes the step of providing a user-removable telematics component with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device, a data pump, and a short range wireless personal area network transceiver. The telematics component is communicatively connected to an integrated communication device of the vehicle. The integrated communication device has a short range wireless personal area network transceiver and a memory storing a list that includes at least a phone number of at least one currently paired mobile communication device. At least a portion of the list is periodically received at the data pump, the portion of the list including the phone number of the at least one currently paired mobile communication device. The portion of the list is periodically transmitted out from the telematics component to an off-site telematics provider utilizing a communications path of the data pump.

A method for providing telematics to a vehicle includes providing a user-removable telematics component with a GPS device, a data pump, a short range wireless personal area network (e.g., Bluetooth) transceiver, and a user interface. The telematics component connects to an integrated communication device of the vehicle having a transceiver and a memory storing a list including a number of a currently paired mobile communication device. In response to a request for assistance, the user interface receives the request and the data pump receives at least the number. An assistance request is transmitted out from the telematics component utilizing a data pump communications path, the request including the number. An off-site telematics provider receives the request for assistance and a communication link between the off-site telematics provider and the at least one currently paired mobile communication device is opened.

A method for providing telematics to a vehicle includes the steps of providing a user-removable telematics component with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device, a data pump, and a short range wireless personal area network transceiver (e.g., Bluetooth transceiver), communicatively connecting the telematics component to an integrated communication device of the vehicle, the integrated communication device having a vehicle short range wireless personal area network transceiver operable to connect and communicate with at least one of at least one mobile communication device selected from a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and a pre-defined mobile communication device and a least one vehicle communications bus, receiving at the data pump a request from the at least one mobile communication device to perform a vehicle function, and performing the vehicle function with the telematics component.

A method for providing telematics to a vehicle includes the steps of providing a user-removable telematics component that has a Global Positioning System device, a data pump, and a short range wireless personal area network transceiver (e.g., Bluetooth transceiver), communicatively connecting the telematics component to an integrated communication device of the vehicle, the integrated communication device having a memory holding a list uniquely identifying at least one mobile communication device selected from a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and a pre-defined mobile communication device, transmitting a request for information out from the telematics component utilizing a communications path of the data pump, receiving the request for information at an off-site telematics provider, and channeling a response to the request for information from the off-site telematics provider automatically through the at least one mobile communication device.

A retrofitting telematics device for a vehicle that has an integrated communication device with a short range wireless personal area network transceiver (e.g., a Bluetooth transceiver) and a memory holding a list uniquely identifying at least one mobile communication device that is a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and/or a pre-defined mobile communication device. The retrofitting telematics device includes a user-removable telematics component with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device, a short range wireless personal area network transceiver (e.g., a Bluetooth transceiver) that is operable to communicatively connect to the transceiver of the vehicle, and a data pump communicatively coupled with the GPS device and the transceiver of the user-removable telematics device and programmed to transmit a request for information to the off-site telematics provider utilizing a communications path and request the off-site telematics provider to automatically send the information to the at least one mobile communication device.

A method for providing telematics to a vehicle includes the steps of communicatively connecting a user-removable telematics component to an integrated communication device of the vehicle, the integrated communication device having a memory holding a list uniquely identifying at least one mobile communication device selected from a currently paired mobile communication device, a previously paired mobile communication device, and a pre-defined mobile communication device, transmitting a request for information out from the telematics component utilizing a communications path between the data pump and the integrated communication device, receiving the request for information at an off-site telematics information provider, and channeling a response to the request for information from the off-site telematics information provider automatically through the mobile communication device.
