Enhanced call management services to users receiving incoming calls on extensions on a private branch exchange (PBX) is provided by an application server configured to provide call management services to at least one of the users and a protocol proxy configured to receive call information from the PBX according to a protocol for establishing call sessions. The application server is further configured to receive the call information from the protocol proxy.

An apparatus is provided for forwarding communications automatically. The apparatus includes a processing element that receives data from a local connection point or a network element regarding the presence of a device at or near the local connection point or other location. The device is associated with a first communications terminal and transmits a signal that can be detected by the local connection point or the network element. Upon receiving the data, including an indication of the presence of the device, the apparatus may automatically forward communications from one or more communications terminals to a particular communications terminal, as specified by forwarding instructions. The forwarding instructions may be provided by a user ahead of time or included in the data received by the apparatus, and the instructions may be stored in a storage element of the apparatus. Systems, methods, and computer program products for forwarding communications automatically are also provided.

Methods are described which enable the operator of a network such as an Internet protocol (IP) network to allocate ingress and egress channel capacity for the use by different services or for use by different service providers. The methods can prevent a service provider or a service from overusing network capacity. The methods also enable the network operator to temporarily allocate unused capacity if demand for a service exceeds previously allocated capacity. Further a method is described whereby capacity on a Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) network is sold to service providers with guarantees for the number of available channels, where the channel capacity guarantees could be global, or by any type of subdivision. In addition to having a committed channel capacity, the service provider could be allowed to exceed the committed capacity whenever excess capacity is available on the network.

Allocation of channel capacity in multiservice networks

A multiservice network for delivering enhanced communication services to customer devices attached to either the PSTN, such as telephones and fax machines, or devices attached to the Internet or private data networks, such as PCs or other IP devices, is presented. Enhanced services include IP-based faxing, IP-based telephony, IP-based conferencing, Internet call waiting, messaging services, such as unified messaging, and other advanced services such as find-me-follow-me, and desktop telephony. The present invention provides a system and method for establishing the availability of a node to received a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) call. The present invention comprises attempting to establish a VoIP call to a given node that is the target of the VoIP call, determining whether the attempt to establish the VoIP call is successful; and generating an alarm in response to a call failure. According to embodiments of the invention, the method may comprise extracting call metrics from a VoIP call that provide information regarding the quality of a VoIP connection and generating an alarm in response to the call metrics falling below a threshold.

System and method for IP telephony ping

An Ethernet ADSL adapter controls data communication between an Ethernet port and an ADSL modem connected to an ADSL channel. The adapter includes a first buffer for storing data packets received at the Ethernet port, a second buffer for storing data packets received from the ADSL modem and a controller. When the first buffer contains a first predetermined number of data packets and data packets are not available for transmission to the Ethernet port, a jamming signal is transmitted from the Ethernet port. The jamming signal inhibits transmission of additional data packets to the Ethernet port by other Ethernet nodes until space is available in the first buffer. When the second buffer contains a second predetermined number of data packets, a pause signal is transmitted to the ADSL modem. The pause signal inhibits further transmission of data packets to the ADSL modem on the ADSL channel until space is available in the second&plus; buffer. When a pause signal is received from the ADSL modem, transmission of data packets to the ADSL modem is inhibited.

A system subsidizes telephone calls over a network. The system includes a service provider that establishes a telephone call between a calling party terminal and a called party terminal over the network . During the telephone call, the service provider causes at least one advertisement to be displayed at the calling, or called party terminal. At any time during, or after, the telephone call, the service provider generates a bill based on a subsidized billing rate related to the display of the at least one advertisement.

Advertising-subsidized PC-telephony

A data communication network includes a network access unit for coupling one or more computer devices to the network. The network typically has asymmetric upstream and downstream data transmission rates. The network access device implements a method for acknowledging data packets. When a new packet is received by the network access unit from one of the computer devices, the new packet is placed in an outbound queue in the network access unit. When the new packet contains an acknowledgment, previous acknowledgment packets in the outbound queue that have the same source and destination addresses as the new packet are identified and discarded. Remaining packets are transmitted from the outbound queue in the network access unit. By discarding acknowledgment packets in the network access unit, throughput is increased.
