Techniques for generating action recommendations for a data tape system are disclosed. A data tape system generates action recommendations for a data tape based on library-based metadata messages as well as a measured data quality value of the data tape. The system initiates an operation resulting in the data tape interacting with a media drive. A data tape library controller generates one or more metadata messages based on a result of a requested operation. The metadata message may include information regarding the type of error and a default recommended course of action. The system generates the recommended action for the data tape using a trained machine learning model.

Data tape media quality validation and action recommendation

Techniques for determining a data tape read quality value are disclosed. A data tape system generates a value representing a quality of a data tape based on attributes of the data tape. The system calculates the data quality value using an algorithm based on: (a) a particular data tape error correction value, (b) data tape length value representing a length of data tape traversed during data-processing operations, and (c) a scaling factor. The scaling factor is based on a relationship between the particular data tape error correction value and a rate of degradation of the data tape. The scaling factor may be generated by applying a trained machine learning model to attributes of a data tape. The model generates a scaling factor for a particular data tape based on the attributes of the particular data tape.

Data tape quality analysis

A method for validating media and drives. The method includes receiving a validation request for a data storage tape in a library and, with the tape loaded into a predefined gold drive in the tape library, performing a statistical analysis on the tape to determine an operating parameter such as a measure of read margin for the tape in the predefined gold drive. The method includes validating the tape when the operating parameter compares favorably with a threshold limit defined for the operating parameter for the tape library. The method includes, when the operating parameter fails to compare well with the threshold limit, running a performance test on a drive qualified tape from the library loaded into the predefined gold drive and, when the drive qualified tape passes the test, identifying the tape as degraded. The method includes, when the drive qualified tape fails the test, re-qualifying the gold drive.

Media and drive validation in tape libraries

A method for monitoring and predicting health of tape drives and media in a tape library. The method includes receiving exchange data associated with an exchange in the tape library. Then the method includes, with an analytics module, processing the exchange data to determine gain types for the exchange. Based on the gain type, a health gain value is assigned to a tape drive and media and current suspicion level values are independently assigned to the tape drive and the media. The method includes assigning a first health indicator to the media and a second health indicator to the tape drive based on these two suspicion level values. In some embodiments of the method, the current suspicion level value calculating step includes summing the health gain value with a number of health gain values assigned to the tape drive and the media for up to a predefined number of monitored exchanges.

Methods for predicting tape drive and media failures

A method for compensating for tape deformation in a tape drive includes determining location of deformation on a tape; processing the tape in a first manner before and after the deformation; and processing the tape proximate the deformation in a second manner different than the first manner. The step of processing the tape in the first manner comprises recording data on the tape.

Method and system for compensating for tape deformation

A data storage tape cartridge is provided with a combination tape including a data storage tape, an intermediate portion and a leader. A servo track and media information region is provided on the intermediate portion of the tape. The servo track is read by a servo track reader of a data storage apparatus. The media information region is read by the read/write head of the data storage apparatus.

A method for avoiding tape stiction is provided with a tape drive with a pair of motors for driving a pair of tape reels for conveying data tape across one or more read/write heads. Tachometers measure rotation of the pair of tape reels. Motion of the tape is started and rotation of the tape reels is measured by the tachometers. The measurement of the rotation of the tape reels is compared to determine if there is enough slack associated with tape stiction. The location of tape stiction is stored and weighted. Another method stops motion of the tape at a location wherein excessive tape stiction has not been detected. A tape drive is provided for performing methods for avoiding tape stiction.

Tape drive for avoiding tape stiction

An apparatus and method for controlling the movement of an elevator mechanism in a tape drive system. The mechanism of the present invention employs a tachometer to detect the magnetic decoupling of a cartridge from a cartridge reel motor. A holding torque is placed on the cartridge reel motor. A voltage or current ramp is supplied to the elevator mechanism, wherein the elevator mechanism raises and magnetically decouples the tape cartridge from the cartridge reel motor. As the coupling force is broken, the torque placed on the cartridge reel motor causes the motor to turn. The tachometer detects the magnetic decoupling of the cartridge from the cartridge reel motor by sensing the angular displacement of the motor. In response, the controller decreases the voltage or current ramp to adapt to the load reduction on the elevator mechanism, and thereby more smoothly continue the elevator motion.

Method for sensing cartridge decoupling in tape drive

An apparatus and method for compensating for environmental effects on media. The apparatus includes an array of servo readers that are positioned at a non-zero azimuth angle relative to a medium. The position of the array of servo readers is dynamically updateable in both a vertical direction and an azimuth angle direction based on a combination of an average position error signal of both an upper portion of the servo readers and a lower portion of the servo readers. Based on the average position error signal and a reference signal, a controller generates control signals that are output to one or more actuators. The actuators then adjust the position of the array of servo readers based on the control signals received.

Apparatus and method for compensating for environmental effects on media

An improved tape storage device having information for converting longitudinal physical positions written in a medium to logical positions used by a tape drive. The conversion information, an offset and an optional maximum physical position value, are stored in one or more locations in the tape storage device. Methods of operating the tape drive are disclosed to determine and store the conversion information in the tape storage device. Another method of operation enables the tape drive to read the conversion information and convert the physical positions to logical positions. The method works for both center loading and end loading medium. Possible numeric rollover of the physical positions is detected by one of several methods including the step values between adjacent physical positions, comparing the logical positions with an upper and lower boundary, and generating a lookup table where the rollover is represented by a wraparound between the top and bottom of the table.

Method of synchronizing physical and logical positions in a magnetic tape recording device

A method and system for controlling position of a tape head relative to a tape includes sensing the servo track of a tape with servo read elements of the tape head. A position error signal is then generated for each servo read element. indicative of a position of the servo read element relative to the servo track. The position error signal from each servo read element is then determined to be either an unexpected or an expected position error signal. A position error signal is unexpected when at least one measured parameter based on a function of movement of the position of the servo read element relative to the servo track is greater than a predetermined threshold limit and is expected when the at least one measured parameter is lesser than the predetermined threshold limit. A position error signal for each unexpected position error signal is then predicted based on a function of the expected position error signals from the other servo read elements and historical behavior of the unexpected position error signal. A feedback signal is then compiled as a function of the expected position error signals and the predicted position error signals. The tape head is then positioned as a function of the feedback signal.
