Calibration of MEMS sensor

An acceleration-sensing device having error correction includes a stator having at least one conductor affixed to a surface and a proof mass having a first conductor affixed at a first location relative to the at least one conductor affixed to a surface of the stator. The proof mass includes a second conductor affixed at a second location relative to the at least one conductor affixed to a surface of the stator, wherein an excitation signal applied to the first conductor of the proof mass brings about a force on the proof mass in the plane of motion of the proof mass that is substantially equally opposed by a force resulting from an excitation signal applied to the second conductor of the proof mass in the plane of motion of the proof mass.

Error correction in acceleration-sensing devices

An optical interconnect includes a first circuit board having an optical source and an optical receiver; and a second circuit board having data source and an optical modulator optically coupled with the optical source and optical receiver, wherein the optical modulator is configured to encode data from the data source into an optical signal from the optical source. The optical receiver is configured to receive the optical signal from the optical modulator. A method of optical communication includes generating on a first circuit board an optical signal directed at a second circuit board; modulating the optical signal with data at the second circuit board; reflecting the optical signal to the first circuit board; and demodulating the optical signal to receive the data at the first circuit board.

Optical interconnect

Systems and a method for routing optical signals are disclosed. One system includes a first large core hollow metal waveguide configured to guide a substantially coherent optical beam. A second large core hollow waveguide is optically coupled to the first waveguide with a coupling device. The coupling device is configured to divide the coherent optical beam into a transmitted beam and a reflected beam. Beam walk-off within the coupling device causes the transmitted beam to be shifted by an offset amount. The second large core hollow metal waveguide is shifted from the first large core hollow metal waveguide by approximately the offset amount to receive the shifted transmitted beam.

Systems and method for routing optical signals

An optical splitter device and method are provided. The device can include a waveguide having walls forming a large hollow core. The waveguide can be configured to direct an optical signal through the large hollow core. An optical tap can be formed through at least one wall of the waveguide. In addition, a prism can be located in the large hollow core of the waveguide and aligned with the optical tap. A splitter coating can be provided on the prism to direct a portion of the optical signal outside of the waveguide through the optical tap.

An optical interconnect includes a set of splitters. Each splitter includes a source waveguide, a reflection waveguide, an output waveguide, and a partially reflective mirror element with a reflective coating. The source waveguide and the reflection waveguide are optically coupled to the partially reflective element. A photonic signal from the source waveguide is partially reflected off the reflective coating as a reflected signal into the reflection waveguide. The output waveguide is optically coupled to the opposite surface and configured such that a non-reflected portion of the photonic signal propagates into the output waveguide. The reflective coating includes a reflected surface area interfacing with the photonic signal form the source waveguide, and power of the non-reflected portion is a function of the reflective surface area interfacing with source waveguide.

One aspect is a drop detection arrangement including a light source for projecting a light beam for scattering light off of an ejected drop. The arrangement includes a light collector configured to collect the scattered light off the ejected drop and a light detector coupled to the light collector and configured to process scattered light into an output signal. The arrangement includes a controller configured to receive the output signal from the light detector. The output signal is indicative of the condition of the ejected drop.

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to self-authenticating, quantum random bit generators that can be integrated into an optoelectronic circuit. In one embodiment, a quantum random bit generator comprises a transmission layer that includes an electromagnetic radiation source coupled to a waveguide branching into a first, second, and third waveguides. The radiation source generates pulses of electromagnetic radiation in a first polarization state. Polarization rotators are operably coupled to the second and third waveguides and rotate pulses transmitted in the second waveguide into a second polarization state and rotate pulses transmitted in the third waveguide into a third polarization state. The system control generates a sequence of bits based on polarization basis states of the pulses transmitted in the first waveguide, and tomographically authenticates randomness of the sequence based on polarization basis states of the second and third pulses.

A daisy-chain optical interconnection technique provides connectivity among a plurality of circuit boards. A plurality of optical cables is connected between pairs of the circuit boards to form a ring. Optical connection matrices disposed on each circuit board accept the ends of the optical cables. The optical connection matrices include optical vias to connect selected ones of the optical paths between ends of the optical cables. Unselected ones of the optical paths are coupled to optical transmitters and optical receivers on each board.

Optical devices including waveguide grating structures are described. In accordance with one embodiment, an optical device is provided comprising a horizontal waveguide grating structure having at least one waveguiding layer and at least one subwavelength periodic grating layer. The optical device further comprises upper and lower cladding layers immediately adjoining respective upper and lower surfaces of the waveguide grating structure and having refractive indices lower than a lowest-index one of the waveguiding layers, incident radiation propagating through one of the upper and lower cladding layers toward the waveguide grating structure. The waveguide grating structure is configured for peak reflection of the incident radiation at a peak reflection frequency. A cumulative thickness of the waveguiding layers is less than one tenth of a free space wavelength of the incident radiation at the peak reflection frequency divided by an average refractive index of the waveguiding layers.
