A trip mechanism for a fuse includes a trip unit disposed within an elongated housing of the fuse, and a processor. The trip unit includes a fuse element and an actuator for severing the fuse element. The processor is in electrical communication with the trip unit, and is adapted to monitor electrical current. Responsive to the processor detecting a predetermined prescribed electrical current, the processor is adapted to signal the actuator to sever the fuse element. The processor is programmable to selectively adjust the predetermined prescribed electrical current, thereby enabling the fuse to have a plurality different current ratings.

A fuse includes a body, a first conductive terminal coupled with a first end of the body, and a second conductive terminal coupled with a second end of the body. The body, the first conductive terminal, and the second conductive terminal define an exterior of the fuse. The fuse also includes an interruption assembly including a fusible element. The fusible element includes carbon fiber, is disposed on a conductive path between the first conductive terminal and the second conductive terminal, and is configured to break when a current through the fusible element exceeds a predetermined current.

A trip mechanism for a fuse includes a trip unit disposed within an elongated housing of the fuse, and a processor. A fuse mounting assembly includes an epoxy-bonded glass-fiber core that is surrounded by a resilient sleeve having a number of radially extending members. Attached to an end of the core is a first mounting bracket and attached to another end of the core is another mounting bracket. Each of the mounting brackets is connected to a fuse which is structured to protect a power circuit.

The fuse includes a housing, a first conductive cap, a second conductive cap, a plurality of conductive elements extending through the housing, and a conductive connector that is electrically coupled to a conductive element. One or more conductive elements are electrically connected to the first conductive cap at any one time.

A shorting system, which eliminates persistent arcing faults in power distribution equipment, includes a first shorting switch having separable contacts, an actuation input and a fuse electrically connected in series with those contacts. A second shorting switch includes an actuation input and separable contacts, which are electrically connected in parallel with the series combination of the fuse and the first shorting switch contacts. A detection circuit includes one or more arcing light sensors and an actuation circuit. The light sensors detect arcing fault light and the actuation circuit responsively outputs a first trigger signal to the first shorting switch actuation input to close its contacts. For a persistent arcing fault, which is not eliminated by the first shorting switch, a predetermined time after the first trigger signal, the actuation circuit responsively outputs a second trigger signal to the second shorting switch actuation input to close its contacts.

System for eliminating arcing faults and power distribution system employing the same

An exhaust control device for use with a circuit interrupter includes a casing having a first expansion chamber and a second expansion chamber that are operationally disposed upstream of a heat sink and a damper, with the second expansion chamber being in fluid communication with the first expansion chamber and being in register with an inlet of the casing. The first expansion chamber extends between the inlet and the heat sink. The heat sink is a porous member that is annular in cross-section and includes a central cavity formed therein, the second expansion chamber being disposed in the central cavity. The first and second expansion chambers are configured to separate a blast of gases from the circuit interrupter into first and second pressure waves that sequentially travel through the heat sink and the damper, which reduces the peak intensity of the blast, extends its duration, and reduces its ionization level.

Exhaust control device for use with circuit interrupter

An arc fault detector turns on an electronic switch connecting a power distribution cable to ground thereby actuating a cable limiter to isolate the power distribution cable in response to an arc fault even though the arc fault itself does not create a low enough impedance fault to actuate the cable limiter directly. The electronic switch can be a sacrificial low cost silicon controlled rectifier which is destroyed by the ground fault it creates as long as the let-through current of the cable limiter is below the explosion current of the SCR. A single arc fault detector and SCR which fails as a short circuit can be used to actuate cable limiters at both ends of a short power distribution cable fed at both ends, or preferably separate protection can be provided adjacent both cable limiters.
