Implementations of the disclosure describe an Open Automated Demand Response (OADR) endpoint device. A method of the disclosure includes receiving, by a processing device of an endpoint device, a first message comprising a first market energy price, determining whether a first quantity of energy has been consumed within a first time period by at least one energy device associated with the endpoint device, responsive to a determination that the first quantity of energy has been consumed by the at least one energy device within the first time period, determining whether the first market energy price is greater than a price threshold and responsive to a determination that the first market energy price is greater than the price threshold, causing the at least one energy device to stop consuming additional amounts of energy.

A first Open Automatic Demand Response (OpenADR)-compliant server may receive from a second OpenADR 2.0-compliant server, an OpenADR 2.0-compliant virtual end node (VEN), or building energy management system, a first message that represents an OpenADR-conformant message. The first message may include an energy price associated with one or more energy consuming or producing devices. The first OpenADR-compliant server may provide one or more instructions to an endpoint device operable to control the one or more energy consuming or producing devices. Responsive to the first OpenADR-compliant server determining the energy price exceeds a first threshold, the first OpenADR-compliant server may transmit the one or more instructions to the endpoint device to cause the one or more energy consuming or producing devices to reduce operations in response to determining that the energy price exceeds the first threshold.

A system and method for short message service (SMS)-enabled Open Automated Demand Response (OADR) server and related communications is presented. The method includes receiving, by a processing device integrated with a first endpoint device, a first SMS message that represents a first OADR-conformant message, processing the first SMS message, and causing an energy consuming device to execute an action based on the first SMS message.

A system and method for two way short message service (SMS)-enabled BGM and related communications is presented. The method includes receiving, by a processing device integrated with a blood glucose meter (BGM), a first short message service (SMS) message comprising a question, presenting the question at the BGM, receiving a response to the question, translating the response to the question into a second SMS message, translating blood glucose measurement information into a third SMS message, the blood glucose measurement information received from a test of a user by the BGM, and transmitting the second and third SMS messages to a receiver.
