A primer composition for use in the bonding of asphalts comprising the reaction product of an elastomer and a terpene resin. The primer composition of this invention can be used in the treatment of substrates to which asphalts are bonded to improve the bonding relationship between the substrate and the asphalt, such as in road-paving applications, roofing applications and the like.

A pressure-sensitive adhesive is disclosed which is prepared by hot melt blending paving grade asphalt, a depolymerized virgin rubber, a terpene resin, and a vulcanizable, non-depolymerized styrene-butadiene copolymer. These adhesives are especially useful in forming membranes by coating one side of an asphaltic based coated reinforcement with these adhesives. They are useful for highway repair and maintenance purposes and for waterproofing and show good adhesion to cementitious, for example asphaltic concrete or Portland cement concrete, substrates.

Blended pressure-sensitive asphaltic based adhesives

Improved chemically modified asphalts are provided of the type which is the reaction product of asphalt, a vinyl aromatic monomer and a rubbery polymer. The improved compositions are capable of impregnating glass fiber bundles and have increased elastic recovery rates, increased viscosity stability, less tack and lower viscosity. Such improved compositions are obtained by employing a styrene-butadiene thermoplastic rubber copolymer as a coreactant with the asphalt and vinyl aromatic monomer.

Thermally insensitive adhesives having good adhesion to cementitious substrates and having good low temperature flexural strengths, which consists essentially of the reaction product of asphalt flux, a polymerizable vinyl aromatic monomer, a non-depolymerized rubber, a depolymerized rubber and a terpene resin are provided. These adhesives are outstandingly adapted for use as the adhesives for preformed membranes of the type which comprise an asphaltic coated fibrous reinforcement material having an asphalt based pressure sensitive adhesive on one side thereof.
