A guidance system utilizes ultrasound imaging or other suitable imaging technology. In one embodiment, the guidance system includes an imaging device including a probe for producing an image of an internal body portion target, such as a vessel. One or more sensors may be associated with the probe. The system may include a medical device, such as a needle, separate from the probe, the medical device having a magnetic field associated therewith. The system may include a processor that uses data relating to the magnetic field sensed by the one or more sensors to determine a position and/or orientation of the medical device. The system may also include a display that shows an image of the internal body portion target taken by the ultrasound imaging probe and a depiction of the medical device positioned and/or oriented with respect to the image.

Apparatus for use with needle insertion guidance system

A method of attaching a magnetic element to a needle assembly. The needle assembly can include a cannula extending along a longitudinal axis. The method can include placing the magnetic element in a magnetic field such that a magnetic axis of the magnetic element substantially aligns with the magnetic field. The method can further include securing the magnetic element to a portion of the needle assembly while the magnetic element is substantially aligned with the magnetic field such that the magnetic axis of the magnetic element is secured in a desired predetermined orientation.

A control system and method for automatically adjusting the height of an external ventricular drain from a patient. The height of a pole supporting the bag into which the fluid is drained can be varied, increased or decreased, as driven by a motor. A drip chamber and collection bag that receive the fluid from the patient are attached to the height variable pole. An external fluid pressure tube is coupled to the patient at one end and to a pressure sensor at the other. The pressure sensor is coupled to the height variable pole. The system includes a feedback loop that adjusts the height of the external ventricular drain (EVD) to match the height of the patient's head. As the patient's head moves up or down, the variable height pole moves up and down a corresponding distance to maintain the patient's intracranial or intraspinal pressure, and therefore the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage rate, at a preset value.

System and method for automatically adjusting an external ventricular drain

A method of training includes providing a medical device having a tangible proximal portion including a magnetic element, and using a virtual tracking system to simulate a distal portion of the medical device. The virtual tracking system can include a tracking component and a display. The tracking component can be configured to detect a magnetic field of the magnetic element and to generate magnetic field strength data. The tracking component can include a processor that iteratively computes position data of the distal portion of the medical device according to the magnetic field strength data to simulate insertion of the distal portion of the medical device into a body of a patient. The display can be configured to depict an image of the position data of the distal portion of the medical device.

System and methods for guiding a medical instrument

A virtual tracking system for a virtual medical device. The virtual medical device may include a tangible proximal portion that at least temporarily has a magnetic element attached thereto. The system includes a tracking circuit configured to track movement of the virtual medical device and a display. The tracking circuit may include at least one reception component configured to detect a magnetic field of the magnetic element and to generate magnetic field strength data. The tracking circuit may also include a processor that iteratively computes position data of a virtual distal portion of the virtual medical device according to the magnetic field strength data so as to simulate insertion of the virtual distal portion of the virtual medical device into a body of a patient. The display may be configured to depict an image of the computed position data of the virtual distal portion of the virtual medical device.

Systems and methods for guiding a medical instrument

A guidance system for assisting with the insertion of a needle into a patient body is disclosed. The guidance system utilizes ultrasound imaging or other suitable imaging technology. In one embodiment, the guidance system comprises an imaging device including a probe for producing an image of an internal body portion target, such as a vessel. One or more sensors are included with the probe. The sensors sense a detectable characteristic related to the needle, such as a magnetic field of a magnet included with the needle. The system includes a processor that uses data relating to the sensed characteristic to determine a 3-D position of the needle. The system includes a display for depicting the position of the needle. A needle assembly including a hub, cannula, and magnetic element is also disclosed, wherein a magnetic axis of the magnetic element is configured to be coaxially aligned with the needle cannula.

A support structure device is configured to assist a human patient to rise. The support structure includes a tube bent into a shape described by way of a reference frustum such as a four-sided truncated pyramid. Each side of a top rectangular perimeter of the frustum is shorter than a corresponding side of the bottom rectangular perimeter, and each parallel side of a first trapezoidal perimeter of the frustum is shorter than a corresponding parallel side of a second trapezoidal perimeter. The reference frustum has a height between 10 and 18 inches, the top rectangular perimeter has a length between 10 and 16 inches and a width between 6 and 14 inches, and the bottom rectangular perimeter has a length between 12 and 18 inches and a width between 8 and 16 inches.

An integrated catheter placement system and method for placing a catheter in a patient body. The system may include a system console having a display, a tip location sensor operably connected to the system console and placed onto a body of a patient. The tip location sensor may be designed to sense a magnetic field of a first medical device. The system may also include an ECG tip confirmation component operably connected to the system console via the tip location sensor, and an ultrasound probe operably connected to the system console, the ultrasound probe including one or more magnetic sensors designed to sense a magnetic field of a second medical device different from the first medical device. The system may further include a processor associated with the console designed to utilize data relating to the magnetic field of the second medical device to determine a position and/or orientation thereof.

A medical instrument guiding device includes a body base component, and a guide body upper component assembled to the body base component. The guide body upper component has a substantially semi-spherical shape to house a medical instrument guide ball resting on a friction surface located within the body base component. The surface of the guide body upper component includes a cut out working area, and a surface of the medical instrument guide ball is exposed by the cut out working area. A medical instrument port is arranged on a truncated surface of the medical instrument guide ball, and a medical instrument may be passed through the medical instrument port. The medical instrument guide ball permits the medical instrument to be moved in three dimensions. The medical instrument port permits the medical instrument to be advanced into a patient.

A transceiver module release system is disclosed. The system may be used to release a transceiver module housed in a cage that is permanently mounted on a printed circuit board. The release system may include a bail that rotates a slide-block through a slot to urge the bail forward in a slide-block path on the transceiver module. The bail has a hook shaped structure adapted to be connected with a detachable pull tab. As the bail begins to move forward from the locked position, wedge elements at the end of a pair of slide-block arms extending rearward from the bail may contact locking tabs on the cage, forcing the locking tabs outward. As the locking tabs are forced outward, the shoulders of the transceiver module are released, and the transceiver module is free to slide-block out of the cage as the operator pulls on the bail.

Transceiver module release mechanism

A method for displaying a position of a medical device, such as a catheter, during insertion thereof into a patient. In one example embodiment, the method includes obtaining a first set of detected position data relating to a location marker, such as a permanent magnet, then determining a possible first position thereof. A first confidence level relating to a match between the first set of detected position data and a first set of predicted position data is assigned. A determination is made whether the first confidence level meets or exceeds a first threshold. If the first confidence level meets or exceeds the first threshold, a determination is then made whether the first position of the location marker is within a first detection zone. If the first position of the location marker is within the first detection zone, the first position of the location marker is displayed.

Systems and methods for positioning a catheter

A release mechanism for releasing a transceiver module from a cage includes a fixed component, a locking component, and a pull component, where the locking component is used for locking the transceiver module in the cage and pivotally connected to the transceiver module. The user pulls the pull component to make the locking component to rotate to unlock and then draw out the transceiver module. The locking component further includes a spring part against the fixed component to resist the rotation and assist the locking component back to the original position. According to the fewer components and the easy assembly of the release mechanism, the total assembly cost of the transceiver module can be reduced significantly.
