A material sensing apparatus comprises an excitation source configured to induce waves in a workpiece, and an optical waveguide interferometer configured to sense the induced waves in the workpiece. The optical waveguide interferometer comprises a probe segment having a probe segment end, and an adjustable coupler configured to permit setting a gap between the probe segment end and the workpiece. A controller is coupled to the adjustable coupler and configured to set the gap between the probe segment end and the workpiece.

An optical microresonator is formed as a microcylinder and a resonant waveguide on the microcylinder and having a plurality of spaced resonant elements such as circumferential ridges for optically coupling light from an optical source waveguide onto the microcylinder. The resonant elements have a spacing, height and angle to impart a desire polarization and bring in the polarization states into degenerancy. A coating could also be formed over the resonant waveguide and operative with the resonant waveguide and of a refractive index to bring any polarization states into degenerancy.

An optical microresonator includes microcylinder and spiral resonant waveguide formed on the microcylinder that optically couples light from an optical source waveguide to the microcylinder and slows light propagating along the microcylinder. A coupling element, for example, a diffraction grating can be operative with the resonant waveguide structure and configured to meet a desired phase matching A second microcylinder having a spiral resonant waveguide formed thereon can be positioned adjacent to the spiral resonant waveguide formed on the first microcylinder for coupling therewith. The spiral resonant waveguides on first and second microcylinders can be configured for slowing light propagating along the microcylinder.

An optical microresonator and method of forming same includes a microcylinder and a circumferential coating formed on the microcylinder. This coating has a higher index of refraction than the microcylinder and is of such thickness relative to the diameter of the microcylinder that a resonant waveguide is formed such that light optically couples from an optical source waveguide onto the microcylinder.

An optical microresonator includes a microcylinder and resonant waveguide formed on the microcylinder as a plurality of spaced resonant elements, for example, spaced ridges, and coupling elements operative with the resonant elements for optically coupling light from an optical source waveguide onto the microcylinder and changing light direction on the microcylinder.

An optical microresonator coupling system includes an optical source waveguide through which light travels. A microcylinder is positioned adjacent the optical source guide and has a resonant waveguide formed as spaced resonant elements, such as circumferential ridges and a diffractive coating thereon that optically couples light from the optical source guide onto the microcylinder. An optical exit waveguide is positioned adjacent the microcylinder and spaced from the optical source waveguide for coupling light from the microcylinder into the optical exit waveguide.
