The present disclosure generally relates to certain compositions having components that can become liquid or exhibit a phase change during use, and methods related to the same. These can be used, for example, as thermal interface materials for various applications. Certain thermal interface materials such as those discussed herein may represent a new structure in which the material is solid, but becomes liquid during use, which may improve heat transport, for example, because the liquid improves contact or binding of surfaces, thereby allowing improved heat transport across interfaces between surfaces. For example, in some cases, the composition may be a composite of a solid phase material and a phase change material. In certain aspects, the phase change material exhibits a melt temperature, e.g., where the phase change material can transition from a liquid to a solid. The phase change material may include, for example, a metal, a metal oxide, a metal alloy, or the like. Other aspects generally relate to methods of making or using such compositions, kits including such compositions, or the like.

Liquid metal compositions and methods

Some variations provide a system for producing a functionalized powder, comprising: an agitated pressure vessel; first particles and second particles contained within the agitated pressure vessel; a fluid contained within the agitated pressure vessel; an exhaust line for releasing the fluid from the agitated pressure vessel; and a means for recovering a functionalized powder containing the second particles disposed onto surfaces of the first particles. A preferred fluid is carbon dioxide in liquefied or supercritical form. The carbon dioxide may be initially loaded into the pressure vessel as solid carbon dioxide. The pressure vessel may be batch or continuous and is operated under reaction conditions to functionalize the first particles with the second particles, thereby producing a functionalized powder, such as nanofunctionalized metal particles in which nanoparticles act as grain refiners for a component ultimately produced from the nanofunctionalized metal particles. Methods for making the functionalized powder are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for nanofunctionalization of powders

The present invention generally relates to fiber-reinforced composites, including carbon-fiber composites. These materials are useful in load-bearing components for mechanical systems, and other applications. Surprisingly, the carbon fibers can be aligned using an applied magnetic field applied directly to the carbon fibers, rather than to magnetic materials that are used to indirectly align the carbon fibers. For example, the carbon fibers may exhibit an anisotropic diamagnetic response in response to a magnetic field, which can be used to align the fibers. In some cases, the carbon fibers may be relatively pure, and/or have a relatively high modulus, which may result in diamagnetic properties. Other embodiments are generally directed to systems and methods for making or using such composites, kits involving such composites, or the like.

Systems and methods for carbon fiber alignment and fiber-reinforced composites

A sensor apparatus includes a first of a plurality of layers having a top layer, a bottom layer, and at least one intermediate layer having an electrical conductor layer, each of the top layer, the bottom layer, and the at least one intermediate layer is disposed in direct contact with a respective adjacent layer. A second of the plurality of layers is disposed in direct contact with the first plurality of layers such that the bottom layer of the second plurality of layers is disposed in direct contact with the top layer of the first plurality of layers. The first and second plurality of layers are productive of a piezoelectric voltage absent of an external current producing device and in response to being deformed, and are productive of a change in capacitance in response to being deformed.

Layered sensor apparatus and method of making same

According to an embodiment of the present invention, a three-dimensional architected armor structure includes a core structure and a matrix. The core structure includes: a plurality of impact members; a plurality of joint members below the impact members; and a plurality of connection members respectively extending between one of the impact members and one of the joint members. The matrix fills at least a portion of a space between the impact members, the joint members, and the connection members.

Architected armor

An interposer includes an interposer substrate having a series of vias, and a series of metallic interconnects in the series of vias. The interposer substrate has a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The interposer substrate includes a dielectric material. A first pitch of the series of vias at a first end of the series of vias is different than a second pitch of the series of vias at a second end of the series of vias.

Interposer with interconnects and methods of manufacturing the same

Resins for 3D printing of a preceramic composition loaded with a solid polymer filler, followed by converting the preceramic composition to a 3D-printed ceramic material, are described. Some variations provide a preceramic composition containing a radiation-curable liquid resin formulation and a solid polymer filler dispersed within the liquid resin formulation. The liquid resin formulation is compatible with stereolithography, UV curing, and/or 3D printing. The solid polymer filler may be an organic polymer, an inorganic polymer, or a combination thereof. The solid polymer filler may itself be an inorganic preceramic polymer, which may have the same composition as a polymerized variant of the liquid resin formulation, or a different composition. Many compositions are disclosed as options for the liquid resin formulation and the solid polymer filler.
