Embodiments of the invention relate to a feedback mechanism that informs a user of a communication device to adjust the volume, pitch, tone or other characteristic of his voice so as to compensate for noise in the surrounding environment. The feedback mechanism includes feedback circuitry that analyzes audio signals from the microphone and preferably from one or more additional environmental noise sensors. From the analysis, the feedback circuitry determines characteristics of the user's voice and characteristics of the environmental noise, and provides an analysis of how the user might modify his voice to best compensate for environmental noise. This analysis results in an indication to the user, such as through a vibration, a sound, or graphical indication on the device, which tells the user whether and to what extent the user should adjust a characteristic of his voice to best overcome such environmental noise.

Method and apparatus for providing feedback of vocal quality to a user

A communication device capable of determining an emotional or physiological state of a user of the device includes an input device that provides a signal indicative of one of an emotional and a physiological state of a user of the device. A controller receives the signal from the input device and interprets the signal into state data identifying one of an emotional and a physiological state of a user of the device. The device makes the state data available to be downloaded such that a device sending a communication can appropriately adapt its communication method and transport mode of user interface to suit the recipient's condition.

A switch network (22) in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) which operates as a combination of a programming transistor (34) and a ferroelectric transistor (32). The programming transistor (34) is selected to transfer a polarizing voltage to a gate terminal of the ferroelectric transistor (32) for programming the ferroelectric transistor (32) in an on-state. The ferroelectric transistor (32) functions as a nonvolatile latch and pass device to provide the electrical interconnect path that links multiple Configurable Logic Blocks (CLBs). The programming transistor (34) is selected to transfer a depolarizing voltage to the gate terminal of the ferroelectric transistor (32) for programming the ferroelectric transistor (32) in an off-state.

An artificial neural network is provided using a digital architecture having feedforward and feedback processors interconnected with a digital computation ring or data bus to handle complex neural feedback arrangements. The feedforward processor receives a sequence of digital input signals and multiplies each by a weight in a predetermined manner and stores the results in an accumulator. The accumulated values may be shifted around the computation ring and read from a tap point thereof, or reprocessed through the feedback processor with predetermined scaling factors and combined with the feedforward outcomes for providing various types neural network feedback computations. Alternately, the feedforward outcomes may be placed sequentially on a data bus for feedback processing through the network. The digital architecture includes a predetermined number of data input terminals for the digital input signal irrespective of the number of synapses per neuron and the number of neurons per neural network, and allows the synapses to share a common multiplier and thereby reduce the physical area of the neural network. A learning circuit may be utilized in the feedforward processor for real-time updating the weights thereof to reflect changes in the environment.
