An antenna assembly may include an antenna element, a radome structure disposed proximate to the antenna element and including a plurality of plasma elements, a driver circuit operably coupled to the plasma elements to selectively ionize individual ones of the plasma elements, and a controller. The controller may be operably coupled to the driver circuit to provide control of plasma density of the individual ones of the plasma elements. The plasma elements may include respective enclosures. At least some of the enclosures may have at least two peripheral edge surfaces substantially fully contacted by corresponding peripheral edge surfaces of adjacent enclosures at at least one section along a longitudinal length thereof.

An antenna system. The system includes a feed network with first input/output terminals and second output/input terminals, and antenna elements forming an array. In a first configuration: each of the second plurality of output/input terminals is connected to one of the antenna elements, the array operating according to a different radiation pattern based on which one of the first plurality of input/output terminals carries a signal into the feed network. In a second configuration: a selected antenna element is disconnected from the second plurality of output/input terminals and receives a direct signal, bypassing the feed network, and operates according to its independent radiation pattern. Also, in the second configuration each remaining antenna element is disconnected from the second plurality of output/input terminals and connected directly to a detuning network, causing these antenna elements to have a minimal effect on the independent radiation pattern of the selected antenna element.

Typical consumer-grade terrestrial television antennas use simple flat plates in a dipole configuration. Reception is enhanced by elevating the antenna for better line of sight to the broadcast antenna, which often necessitates locating the antenna in the attic of a building or on the roof in the where it is exposed to the weather. The antenna disclosed is uses antenna elements that are substantially planar, have a unique shape that improves reception, and allows for compact packaging in a weatherproof case.

An amplified television antenna system is disclosed that receives its power from a non-dedicated source such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection. The USB connection that powers the amplified television antenna can be made with any USB device such as a television, a television receiver, a desktop computer, a laptop computer, a game console, or a USB AC wall adaptor.
