A system and method for segmenting a plurality of optical fibers to form an arrayed multi-fiber optical connector. In one example embodiment, the present innovations include an optical connector that has a plurality of optical fibers arranged into a two-dimensional array, the optical fibers being segmented by a laser emitting substantially in the infra-red spectrum. The optical fibers are preferably segmented after having been positioned on a substrate that becomes part of the connector.

A filtering technique for a free space communication that features encoding and decoding of signals employing a filtering apparatus that includes a bulk holographic transform function. Employing the encoding and decoding technique facilitates providing a great number of channels of communication in a unit volume while preventing unwanted cross-talk between the communication channels. The present invention provides a real-time luminescent piezoelectric detector capable of sensing the presence of biological and chemical agents. This detector includes a free-standing thin film that is driven by a frequency driver to produce light emitted from an edge of the thin film. A surface layer sensitive to the biological or chemical agent to be detected is disposed on the surface of the thin film. In the presence of the biological or chemical agent to be detected, the light emitted from the edge of the thin film structure is altered. A processor capable of determining the presence and/or concentration of the biological or chemical agent in question based on the altered emitted light receives an output representative of the emitted light and outputs the status of the presence and/or concentration of the biological or chemical agent in question.

System and method of using luminescent piezoelectric to detect biological and/or chemical agents

A miniature projector to allow the projection of images directly on a target surface, such as a viewer's retina, which is a compact and versatile device that further minimizes the potential for total immersion. The miniature projector can be selected for use in the monitor mode or full video and full color or monochrome operation. The miniature projector utilizes miniaturized 2D laser arrays integrated with nonlinear optical processes combining semiconductor technology with optics technology.

Provided is an optical backplane interconnect system, one embodiment of which features transceiver subsystems employing holographic optical elements (HOEs) that define, and discriminate between, differing optical channels of communication. The HOEs employ a holograph transform to concurrently refract and filter optical energy to remove optical energy having unwanted characteristics. To that end, the transceiver subsystem is mounted to an expansion card and includes a source of optical energy and an optical detector. The HOE need not be mounted to the expansion card. In one embodiment, however, the HOE is mounted to the expansion card and in optical communication with either the source of optical energy, the optical detector or both.

A portable laser detection device is disclosed. Optical pulses are sensed by a photodiode and if the pulse width is less than a predetermined value a laser occurred indicator will flash until reset by the user. A laser present indicator will flash and an intermittent audible tone will be generated as long as laser energy having certain characteristics is present. A delay circuit ensures error free detection if a pulse having a width greater than the predetermined value is received immediately after a pulse having a width less than the predetermined value is received. Further, a high energy pulse with a sufficiently fast rise time received by the detector will cause the laser occurred indicator to flash, the laser present indicator to be illuminated continuously, and an audible tone to be generated. The device is shielded against electromagnetic interference and adapts automatically to variations in background noise.
