The present invention is directed to an implant device, in particular an implant device placed between bony, cartilaginous or soft tissues or between prosthetic surfaces to restore or create a gap. More particular the present invention is directed to an implant device made from polymeric material and having a stiffness gradient as well as a limited dimensional deformation, wherein the implant device has a stiffness gradient and a limited dimensional deformation and preferably is at least partially anisotropic.

A bone implant and the method of manufacturing thereof, the bone implant, in particular an inter-vertebral implant, made of a radiation-permeable material having a circular-shaped hollow body with a sleeve. The inter-vertebral implant defining a surface and comprising a front section, a back section, and two lateral sections defining a central axis. The hollow body is subdivided by at least two partitions running essentially parallel to the central axis and which connect the front section to the back section. The surface of the bone implant has surface irregularities of at least 2 &#x3bc;m, and the at least two partitions have at least one perforation.

The locking device for a pliers-shaped tool, preferably a pair of pliers (1), has a lever (7) with a spring (8a) on the inner side of one handle and a shaped rod (9) on the inner side of the other handle (4b). The shaped rod (9) has a catching element (10) and passes through an opening (14) in the lever (7). The lever has a sharp projection (15) in its opening (14), which engages the catching element (10) of the shaped rod (9) in the closed setting in such a way that the pliers (1) can only be closed. A liquid chamber (3) arranged in the bottom of the socket cavity (2) is latitudinally sealed by the engaging ball head (4) of the femoral prosthesis shaft. The ball head (4) of the hip joint prosthesis is supported hydrostatically by the liquid chamber (3) filled with synovia and sealed by the ball head following a deformation of the elastic sealing edge (5). By means of the hydrostatic support, the friction moment increases only a little when the load becomes higher and approaches a constant value which is considerably lower than in conventional hip joint sockets.

An artificial hip joint socket made of plastic is intended to be installed in the pelvic bone without bone cement. The hip joint socket comprises a ribbed outer surface which permits good engagement of the bone tissue as well as two anchor plugs protruding from the outer surface which are intended to be inserted into corresponding bores in the bone. The angle which the plugs form with the socket surface deviate from the angle which the bores form with the socket surface by about 5.degree. in order to effect a predetermined prestressing action which restrains the hip joint socket in position. Furthermore, the hip joint socket comprises at least two barb-like anchor flaps on its outer surface which either lie opposite one another or mutually include an angle of between 120.degree. and 150.degree.. A good seating of the hip joint socket in the bone is ensured by these flaps even immediately after insertion of the hip joint socket. Thus, even if the anchor plugs offer insufficient retention for any reason, the employment of screws or dowels can be completely or partially foregone.

A intramedullary nail of the type adapted to receive a conical drive connection is provided with a slot which extends from the tip to the head for improved elasticity. A locking section is provided at the head to avoid the nail spreading apart when a conical drive connection is used. The nail has a threaded conical socket to receive a drive connection and the thread is shaped to minimize radial forces resulting from driving bolt being screwed into the socket.
