A combination applicator and adapter ('applicator/adapter') is removably attachable to a percussive massage device. The applicator has a plurality of fixed applicator heads that can be applied directly against the body of a subject being massaged to provide a first massage effect. A corresponding plurality of removable applicator heads can be positioned over and attached to the fixed applicator heads. The removable applicator heads are applied against the body of the subject being massaged to provide a second massage experience.

Systems and processes for determining pressure settings for a percussive massage applicator are described. According to one embodiment, a method comprises obtaining an operational current measurement of the motor when the motor has a load. difference value is determined between the current measurement and the operational current measurement. The difference value is compared to two or more predetermined ranges of values that correspond to a pressure level of the percussive applicator. The pressure level may be provided as feedback to the user.

A self-contained reciprocation mechanism is coupleable within an enclosure of a percussive massage device and is configured to receive an applicator head for stimulating a user's muscles. The self-contained reciprocation mechanism includes a spatial positioning bracket, a semi-cylindrical bracket, a piston, a motor, a crank, and a reciprocation linkage. The spatial positioning bracket is configured to receive the other interconnected components of the self-contained reciprocation mechanism and position said components relative to each other at close predetermined tolerances to assure that the interconnected components are properly positioned to provide consistent operating characteristics. The self-contained reciprocation mechanism is coupled within the enclosure using screws which extend through mounting tabs of the spatial positioning bracket.

A percussive massage device includes a self-lubricating cylinder extending along a longitudinal axis. A motor shaft rotates about a central axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. A crank coupled to the shaft includes a pivot offset from the central axis. A reciprocation linkage is coupled between the pivot and a piston that moves longitudinally within the cylinder. An applicator head coupled to a second end of the piston has an end exposed outside the cylinder for application to a person receiving treatment. An annular gasket positioned between the cylinder and the applicator head removes lubricant from an outer surface of the piston to inhibit the lubricant from reaching the applicator head.

A percussive massage device includes an enclosure having a cylindrical bore that extends along a longitudinal axis. A motor has a rotatable shaft that rotates about a central axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. A crank coupled to the shaft includes a pivot, which is offset from the central axis of the shaft. A reciprocation linkage has a first end coupled to the pivot of the crank. A piston has a first end coupled to a second end of the reciprocation linkage. The piston is constrained to move within a cylinder along the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical bore. An applicator head has a first end coupled to a second end of the piston and has a second end exposed outside the cylindrical bore for application to a person receiving treatment. A motor controller measures current applied to the motor and displays a pressure indicator responsive to the measured current.

A percussive massage device includes a cylinder extending along a longitudinal axis. A motor shaft that rotates about a central axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. A crank coupled to the shaft includes a first pivot offset from the central axis. A pinion gear is coupled to the first pivot. The pinion gear rotates within a ring gear. The pinion gear has a second pivot that rotates about the first pivot. A reciprocation linkage is coupled between the second pivot and a piston that moves longitudinally within the cylinder. An applicator head coupled to a second end of the piston has an end exposed outside the cylinder for application to a person receiving treatment. An actuator selectively rotates the ring gear to cause the applicator head to have a first stroke length and at least a second stroke length.

A system applies compression, vibration and heat to a body part of a person. The system includes a portable vibration and heat generation apparatus having a flexible support platform and a bag-like enclosure extending from the support platform. A cylindrical control unit is mounted to the support platform and extends perpendicularly from the support platform. The control unit has a diameter of between 50 millimeters and 100 millimeters. The control unit houses electronic circuitry and at least one battery. Four vibration pods extend from the support platform into the bag-like structure. The bag-like structure also houses a heat generation unit. The control unit extends through a circular bore in a compression wrap. The compression wrap is securable to a body part with a distal wall of the bag-like enclosure against the body part. The system selectively applies vibration, heat or a combination of vibration and heat to the body part.
