A guided mode resonance (GMR) sensor that can be used to simultaneously detect an array of analytes. It provides a diagnostic system that can rapidly detect an array of biomarker proteins in patient samples (such as blood, serum or plasma for example) which can be used as an accurate means to conduct a differential analysis of proteins that allows the discrimination of early and late stages of disease, such as metastatic versus primary ovarian serous carcinomas. The GMR sensor can be provided in a compact size such that it can be portable.

Portable photonic sensor system as an early detection tool for ovarian cancer

A method of fabricating a metasurface comprises coating a photoresist film onto a substrate and loading the coated substrate into a laser interference lithography setup, exposing the photoresist film via a laser with a first interference pattern, the first interference pattern having a first period and a first exposure energy, subsequently exposing the coated substrate with a second interference pattern, the second interference pattern having a second period and a second exposure energy, developing the exposed portions of the photoresist film to form a periodic pattern in the photoresist, and transferring the periodic pattern into the substrate, the substrate supporting an appropriate film system that embodies the final metasurface device.

Rapid large-scale fabrication of metasurfaces with complex unit cells

The invention disclosed herein generally relates to wideband resonant polarizers that require extremely small amounts of matter in their embodiments. These polarizers can be made with dielectric materials such that light and other electromagnetic waves interacting with them suffer essentially no absorptive loss. This new class of polarizers is fashioned with dielectric or semiconductor nano/microwire grids that are mostly empty space if surrounded by air or vacuum. It is fundamentally and practically extremely significant that the wideband spectral expressions presented herein can be generated in these minimal systems. These ultra-sparse polarizers are useful in various spectral regions for numerous useful applications.

Ultra-sparse dielectric resonant polarizers and associated methods

Unpolarized broadband reflectors enabled by a serial arrangement of a pair of polarized subwavelength gratings are disclosed. Device illustrations include partially-etched crystalline-silicon films on quartz substrates and amorphous silicon films on glass. The individual reflectors exhibit extremely wide spectral reflection bands in one polarization. By arranging two such reflectors sequentially with orthogonal periodicities, there results an unpolarized spectral band that exceeds those of the individual polarized bands. In the prototypes disclosed, there results zero-order reflectance exceeding 97% under unpolarized light incidence over a 500-nm-wide wavelength band. This wideband represents a &#x2dc;44% fractional band in the near infrared spectral band. The elemental polarization-sensitive reflectors based on one-dimensional resonant gratings have simple design, robust performance, and are straightforward to fabricate. Hence, this technology is a promising alternative to traditional multilayer thin-film reflectors especially at longer wavelengths of light where multilayer deposition may be infeasible or impractical.

Polarization independent wideband reflectors and methods for their manufacture

Disclosed is a new class of wideband reflectors that are relatively insensitive to deviations from the design parameters. The reflectors are materially sparse while providing high reflectance across wide spectral bands. In some embodiments, a device comprises a substrate and a grating layer disposed on the substrate, wherein the grating layer comprises a periodic grating structure and a sublayer beneath the grating structure and adjacent to the substrate, the grating layer and the sublayer having the same index of refraction. These compact, low-loss elements complement conventional thin-film reflectors while possessing properties not available in thin-film multilayer stacks. The reflectors are based on a fundamental resonance effect, the guided-mode resonance effect, that occurs in periodic structures. Disclosed herein are both one-dimensional and two-dimensional reflectors m zero-contrast embodiments. The disclosed reflectors can be used in various electromagnetic spectral regions for various useful applications.

Wideband resonant reflectors with zero-contrast gratings

Narrow bandpass filters are useful in numerous practical applications including laser systems, imaging, telecommunications, and astronomy. Traditionally implemented with thin-film stacks, there exists alternate means incorporating photonic resonance effects. Accordingly, here we disclose a new approach to bandpass filters that engages the guided-mode resonance effect working in conjunction with a cavity-based Fabry-P&#xe9;rot resonance to flatten and steepen the pass band. Both of these resonance mechanisms are native to simple resonant bandpass filters placed in a cascade. To support the disclosure, numerical examples provide quantitative spectral characteristics including pass-band shape and sideband levels. Thus, we compare the spectra of single-layer 1D- and 2D-patterned resonant gratings with a dual-grating cascade design incorporating mathematically identical gratings. Dual and triple cascade designs are measured against a classic multi-cavity thin-film filter with 151 layers. The disclosed examples show comparable and improved results achieved with these sparse structures while engaging principles absent in corresponding state-of-the-art technology.

Resonant waveguide-granting devices and methods for using same

A guided mode resonance (GMR) sensor assembly and system are provided. The GMR sensor includes a waveguide structure configured for operation at or near one or more leaky modes, a receiver for input light from a source of light onto the waveguide structure to cause one or more leaky TE and TM resonant modes and a detector for changes in one or more of the phase, waveshape and/or magnitude of each of a TE resonance and a TM resonance to permit distinguishing between first and second physical states of said waveguide structure or its immediate environment.

Guided-mode resonance sensors employing angular, spectral, modal, and polarization diversity for high-precision sensing in compact formats

A spectroscopic device is disclosed. The spectroscopic device can include a beam collimation structure with a white light source. The beam collimation structure can also include a lens configured to generate a collimated light beam. The spectroscopic device can also include a polarization modulation structure. The polarization modulation structure can convert the collimated light beam into a common path light beam. The common path light beam can include a delayed component and a polarized component. The spectroscopic device can include a dual spectrum sensing structure. The dual spectrum sensing structure can sense a normalized spectral Stokes vector in real time speed.

Method for snapshot interferometric spectrometry

An apparatus, system, and method for spectrally dense comb-like filters fashioned with thick-guided-mode resonant gratings. A guided-mode resonance (GMR) filter has a film having a thickness many times larger than a wavelength of operation and the film has a first surface and a second surface opposite to the first surface. The GMR filter further has a periodic pattern on the first surface of the film and an antireflection layer on the second surface of the film.

Spectrally dense comb-like filters fashioned with thick-guided-mode resonant gratings

In one aspect, optical devices and components are described herein. In some embodiments, a device comprises a substrate and a grating layer disposed on the substrate, wherein the grating layer comprises a periodic grating structure and a sublayer beneath the grating structure and adjacent the substrate. In some cases, the sublayer has a small thickness compared to the wavelength of light incident on and/or coupled into the device. For example, the sublayer of a device described herein can have a thickness of less than about 200 nm. Moreover, devices and components described herein can exhibit both guided-mode resonance (GMR) effects and a Rayleigh anomaly and can be used to provide various optical components such as optical couplers, substrate wave couplers, and flat-top angular reflectors or flat-top angular filters.
