A means of offsetting semi-circular tube support plates typically present in heat exchangers with cross flow baffles, such as axial flow economizers, utilizing the motive force of steam generator pressurization. The offset slightly flexes the tubes, thereby providing a preload which minimizes the potential for tube vibration and wear.

A tube and shell steam generator in which a series of rods having a diameter substantially equal to that of the heat exchange tubing in the tube bundle are placed on either side of the tube lane to buffer the flow in the tube lane from the heat exchange tubes to attenuate turbulent forces on the first several rows of heat exchange tubes adjacent to the tube lane.

A feedring for use with an axial flow preheat steam generator which utilizes a double wrapper to direct feedwater flow to the cold leg tube bundle region. The feedring is positioned directly over the double wrapper and includes a plurality of standpipes spaced circumferentially along the feedring. The standpipes respectively extend vertically from a lower portion of an interior of the feedring upward through the interior of the feedring. The standpipes have a feedwater intake in the upper portion of the feedring to minimize the potential for vapor formation and bubble collapse water hammer. The components of the standpipe are arranged to minimize the transmission of entrained loose parts from traveling with the feedwater to the tube bundle. A feedwater discharge is provided at the exit of the standpipe at or below the bottom of the feedring, for evenly distributing the feedwater into the double wrapper downcomer.

A steam nozzle flow restrictor for a steam generator that restricts steam exit flow during a steam line break, but has a low pressure drop during normal operation. The flow restrictor has a support web suspended from the steam outlet nozzle with the web having a central opening concentric with the central axis of the nozzle. A shaft is slidably supported within the central opening of the web and has an orifice plate that is suspended within the steam generator at one end of the shaft, spaced from the steam nozzle. The orifice plate closes against the underside of the nozzle upon encountering increased steam exit flow as a result of a steam line break.

A thermal sleeve is mechanically attached to the bore of a surge nozzle of a pressurizer for the primary circuit of a pressurized water reactor steam generating system. The thermal sleeve is attached with a series of keys and slots which maintain the thermal sleeve centered in the nozzle while permitting thermal growth and restricting flow between the sleeve and the interior wall of the nozzle.

A locking mechanism for securing hatches internal to a steam generator that is made up of only mechanical locking elements with fully captured moving parts. The mechanism employs a locking pin with redundant mechanisms to secure the pin in the closed position. The moving parts of the device can be attached directly to a removable hatch so that installation and repairs that may be required can be performed outside of the pressure vessel of the steam generator.

An automated tool and method for spacing a gap between the anti-vibration bars and the flow tubing in the bend region of a tube bundle of a U-tube steam generator, prior to welding, during manufacture. The tool comprises two toggle clamp elements attached to a scissors assembly, which are actuated by a linear drive motor in line with a force gauge, and coupled to a distance measuring device. The tool is operated by first attaching the toggle clamps respectively to two adjacent anti-vibration bars. A linear drive motor on the tool is then cycled and readouts of force and distance are plotted on a curve to determine the point of contact between the anti-vibration bar and the tube. The computer then automatically cycles the drive motor to adjust the gap to a desired range of position coordinates adjacent the point at which the curve markedly changes slope.

A loose parts collection weir that is a nearly cylindrical structure that is integrally attached to the lower deck plate or sludge collector top plate of a steam generator to retain loose parts along the feedwater and recirculation water transit path to the tube bundle. The weir is a near vertical structure built into the upper drum of the steam generator, near the periphery of the lower deck plate or sludge collector top plate in the vicinity of the downcomer annulus. The weir may contain a radially inwardly projecting lip which forms a pocket for loose parts to collect. As the feedwater flows toward the downcomer annulus, loose parts will tend to deposit onto the lower deck plate aided by gravity and be trapped by the loose parts collection weir.

Apparatus for attenuating vibration of a tube includes a cable disposed in the tube and spaced-apart attenuating assemblies mounted on the cable for frictionally engaging the wall of the tube in order to damp vibration of the tube. The assemblies also add rigidity to the tube in order to stabilize the tube against vibration. Each attenuating assembly comprises two spaced-apart end fittings mounted on the cable. A heat vaporizable insert is interposed between the end fittings for maintaining the end fittings in their spaced-apart relationship until the insert vaporizes. A preloaded coiled spring, which interconnects the end fittings and surrounds the insert, biases the end fittings towards each other after the insert vaporizes. A tubular, flexible and braided sheath, which is interposed between the end fittings, surrounds the spring and has respective ends thereof attached to the end fittings. When the insert vaporizes, the spring biases the end fittings closer together, thereby axially shortening the sheath. The braided sheath radially expands as it axially shortens and frictionally contacts the inner wall of the tube to damp the tubular member's vibration. Moreover, the presence of the attenuating assembly in the tube adds rigidity to the tube for stabilizing the tube against vibration.

Apparatus for sealing the primary-side coolant flow nozzles of a nuclear steam generator. The steam generator has relatively small diameter manway openings for providing access to the interior of the steam generator including the inside surface of each nozzle, the manway openings having a diameter substantially less than the inside diameter of each nozzle. The apparatus includes a bracket having an outside surface for matingly sealingly engaging the inside surface of the nozzle. The bracket also has a plurality of openings longitudinally therethrough and a plurality of slots transversely therein in communication with each opening. A plurality of unitary plugs sized to pass through the manway opening are matingly sealingly disposed in each opening of the bracket for sealingly plugging each opening. Each plug includes a plurality of arms operable to engage the slots of the bracket for connecting each plug to the bracket, so that the nozzle is sealed as the plugs seal the openings and are connected to the bracket.

Vessel structural support system for laterally and vertically supporting a vessel, such as a nuclear steam generator having an exterior bottom surface and a side surface thereon. The system includes a bracket connected to the bottom surface. A support column is pivotally connected to the bracket for vertically supporting the steam generator. The system also includes a base pad assembly connected pivotally to the support column for supporting the support column and the steam generator. The base pad assembly, which is capable of being brought to a level position by turning leveling nuts, is anchored to a floor. The system further includes a male key member attached to the side surface of the steam generator and a female stop member attached to an adjacent wall. The male key member and the female stop member coact to laterally support the steam generator. Moreover, the system includes a snubber assembly connected to the side surface of the steam generator and also attached to the adjacent wall for dampening lateral movement of the steam generator. In addition, the system includes a restraining member of 'flat' attached to the side surface of the steam generator and a bumper attached to the adjacent wall. The flat and the bumper coact to further laterally support the steam generator.

A system for removing sludge from a sludge-bearing fluid flowing in a vertically oriented nuclear steam generator so that the sludge is not present therein in sufficient quantities to corrode components (e.g., heat transfer tubes) located in the steam generator. The system comprises a tube sheet having a plurality of apertures therethrough for receiving the ends of the heat transfer tubes so that the tubes are supported by the tube sheet. The tube sheet has a top surface thereon and also a recess formed in the top surface for separating and for collecting the sludge from the sludge-bearing fluid. The recess has a substantially frusto-conical wall generally converging at the bottom end of the recess for providing a settling basin for the sludge after the sludge is separated from the sludge-bearing fluid. A pipe extends from adjacent the bottom end of the recess to the exterior of the heat exchanger for transporting the sludge from the recess to the exterior of the heat exchanger. A valve, which is connected to the pipe, is capable of opening to remove the sludge via blowdown through the pipe and into a holding tank for suitable disposal.

A method is disclosed for making an apparatus for substantially eliminating flow induced vibrations of the flow tubes of a steam generator in the U-bend region. Antivibration bars are provided between columns of flow tubes in the U-bend region which are contoured on one side to correspond with the exact as-built and as-bent diameter of the tubes as located within the tube bundle. Measurements of the actual flow tube diameters are made and recorded and stored either on tape or in a computer which is then used to control a numerically operated machine which configures or machines cutouts in the antivibration bars to precisely correspond with the respective measured diameters of the flow tubes. Only one side of the antivibration bars need to be machined because of the flexibility of the flow tubes which allow the positioning of the other side of the flow tubes along a flat plane.

A method of forming and installing anti-vibration bars into a tube bundle of a steam generator is disclosed. The tube bundle comprises rows of tubes, each tube carrying a high temperature coolant. Each of the resultant anti-vibration bars has a tubular configuration and is disposed between adjacent rows of the tube bundle for stabilizing the tubes against vibration caused by fluids recirculating at high velocities through the steam generator. The method of this invention comprises the steps of inserting at least one anti-vibration bar between adjacent rows of the tube bundle and applying a pressurized fluid in the anti-vibration, thus expanding the anti-vibration bar to contact the tubes of the adjacent rows and to make a series of indentations therein. Typically, the pressure of the fluid is increased incrementally up to a maximum level set such that the configuration of the steam genrator tubes is not deformed. The resultant anti-vibration bar is a hollow member and has first and second series of indentations disposed on opposing sides thereof and spaced from each other a uniform distance corresponding to the spacing between adjacent tubes of a row. The indentations are configured similarly to the shape of the tubes to provide intimate contact there between and to support the tubes against vibration.
