Steel cables are utilized for reinforcing a wide variety of rubber articles. For instance, pneumatic tires are normally reinforced with steel tire cords. It is important for such reinforcing cables to exhibit good fatigue and corrosion resistance. It has been unexpectedly found that the fatigue and corrosion resistance of such cables can be improved by incorporating syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene into the interstices between the steel filaments in such cables. This invention more specifically relates to a cable for reinforcing rubber articles having improved fatigue and corrosion resistance which is comprised of a plurality of steel filaments and syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene, wherein the syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene is dispersed within interstices between said steel filaments.

This invention reveals steel alloys which are particularly suitable for use in manufacturing reinforcing wires for rubber products, such as tires. The steel filaments made by this process have an outstanding combination of strength and ductility. Additionally, the steel alloys of this invention can be patented in a low cost process due to their having a very fast rate of isothermal transformation. This allows the steel in the steel wire being patented to transform from a face centered cubic microstructure to an essentially body centered cubic microstructure within a very short period. This invention more specifically discloses a steel alloy composition which is particularly suitable for use in manufacturing reinforcing wire for rubber products which consists essentially of (a) about 92.8 to about 99.18 weight percent iron, (b) about 0.4 to about 1.5 weight percent carbon, (c) about 0.05 to about 1 weight percent silicon, (d) about 0.05 to about 1.2 weight percent manganese, (e) about 0.01 to about 1.4 weight percent chromium, (f) about 0.3 to about 1.6 weight percent cobalt, and (g) from about 0.01 to about 0.5 weight percent nickel.

This invention reveals a steel wire element useful in the reinforcement of rubber articles in which the steel wire is provided with an adhesive coating comprising a ternary brass alloy containing about 55 percent to about 75 percent by weight copper, about 15 to about 45 percent by weight zinc, and about 0.1 to about 10 percent by weight iron. Preferably this ternary brass alloy will contain about 1 to 5 percent by weight iron. The ternary alloy may be formed by sequentially electroplating layers of copper, iron and zinc followed by heating to promote the diffusion of the copper, iron and zinc layers. The steel wire elements of this invention are useful in the reinforcement of vehicle tires, power transmission belts, conveyor belts, hoses, and the like.
