The present invention encompasses a urethane-modified rosin ester which is derived from an isocyanate and a hydroxyl-functional rosin esterification product of a dimerized rosin. The urethane-modified rosin esters, having a high softening point and good compatibility with hydrocarbon solvents, good gelability and good squalene resistance, are particularly suitable as binders for inks such as fast conversion lithographic inks.

The present invention encompasses a phenolic-modified rosin ester which is derived from a rosin esterification product of a dimerized rosin and a phenolic resin. The resinous binder of the coating compositions is based on a hard polyester polyol containing cyclic moieties plasticized with a soft polyurethane polyol and cured with a curing agent capable of reacting with active hydrogens, for example, an aminoplast curing agent. The coating compositions are particularly useful on elastomeric substrates such as high density polyurethane foams, as well as on metal substrates such as steel and aluminum.

Thermosetting elastomeric coating compositions are disclosed. The resinous binder of the coating compositions is based on a hard polyester polyol containing cyclic moieties plasticized with a blend of soft polyurethane polyols, one of which has a high molecular weight and one of which has a low molecular weight, and cured with a curing agent capable of reacting with active hydrogens, for example, an aminoplast curing agent. The coating compositions are resistant to solvent popping and are particularly useful on elastomeric substrates such as high density polyurethane foams, as well as on metal substrates such as steel and aluminum.

Thermosetting elastomeric coating compositions are disclosed. The resinous binder of the coating compositions is based on a hard polyester polyol containing cycloaliphatic moieties plasticized with a soft polyurethane polyol and cured with a curing agent capable of reacting with active hydrogens, for example, an aminoplast curing agent. The coating compositions are particularly useful on elastomeric substrates such as high density polyurethane foams, as well as on metal substrates such as steel and aluminum.

Coating compositions are formulated using a polyol with a hydroxyl functionality of at least three modified by reaction with a glycidyl ether in proportion of about 0.1 to about 4, preferably from about 0.2 to about 2 moles of glycidyl ether per mole of polyol, with which is combined, as curing agent, a compatible aminoplast resin. When the polyol is trimethylol ethane, for example, and is so modified with allyl or butyl glycidyl ether, for example, and is so modified with allyl or butyl glycidyl ether, for example, and the compositions contain a methylated melamine formaldehyde condensate as curing agent, they are especially suitable for clear top coating surfaces of wood or flat woodstock containing printing inks to simulate woodgrain, to provide a durable coating highly adherent to the inks as well as the cellulosic materials. The compositions may contain high solids content yet they are stable on storage without development of crystallization and are reducible or thinnable with water.
