Methods and apparatus to control movement of a component are disclosed herein. An example apparatus includes a housing defining a bore and a piston disposed inside the bore. The piston is to be coupled to a movable component disposed outside of the bore. The example apparatus further includes a fluid flowline in fluid communication with a first chamber of the bore and a second chamber of the bore. The first chamber is on a first side of the piston, and the second chamber on a second side of the piston. The example apparatus also includes a valve to control fluid flow through the fluid flowline. The valve is to be in a first state to enable the piston to dampen movement of the component, and the valve is to be in a second state to enable the piston to hold the component substantially stationary.

Methods and apparatus to control movement of a component

A transmission device, comprising an offset gearbox assembly coupling rotatable input and output shafts extending in respective input and output axial directions. An output gear is mounted in the offset gearbox assembly and is rotatable in a drive direction about an output gear axis to rotate the output shaft coupled therewith. An idler gear coupled to the output gear is rotatable about an idler gear axis in association with the output gear. An input gear assembly is coupled to the idler gear, is rotatable about an input gear axis in association with the idler gear, and is coupled to the input shaft such that rotation of the input shaft causes rotation of the output gear in the drive direction. The input gear assembly has the input shaft coupled therewith such that the input axial direction is nonparallel to the output axial direction. An associated method is also provided.

Low-profile, rotating-shaft transmission device, and associated method

Provided are half system torque brakes, aircraft utilizing these brakes, and methods of installing these brakes. A half system torque brake includes an input cam assembly slidably disposed on a compression shaft between first and second output cam assemblies. The second output cam assembly is disposed between the input cam assembly and a rotor-stator assembly. When a torque differential between the input cam assembly and either one of the output cam assemblies exceeds its threshold, the same rotor-stator assembly is engaged and prevents further rotation of any cam assembly. Specifically, when the torque differential corresponding to the first output cam assembly exceeds its threshold, this assembly advances away from the input cam assembly and pulls the compression shaft in the same direction, which in turn engages the rotor-stator assembly by advancing the pressure plate to the second output cam assembly. The second output cam engages the rotor-stator assembly directly.

Half system torque brakes

A system for optimizing performance of an aircraft may include a flight control computer for computing an optimum flap setting based on aircraft data. The system may further include a flap control system having a flap control device. The system may additionally include a flap actuation system coupled to the flap control system for positioning the trailing edge device at the optimum flap setting.
