A semantic based document editor is provided. An application such as a document processing application displays previews of a document. The previews include semantic styles. In response to a selection of one of the previews, a semantic style associated with the selected preview is applied to a section of the document. The semantic style is rendered in the selected preview. A suggestion is displayed on the section. The suggestion identifies the section. The suggestion is also formatted based on the semantic style.

Providing semantic based document editor

Electronic reading devices provide readers with text on a display, and enhancements to their functionality and efficiency are discussed herein. Text is provided to the reader in an enhanced contrast mode that highlights the active word and line of the text as well as words of interest in the text so as to improve the functionality of the electronic reading device itself as a provider of textual content.

Immersive electronic reading

An image of an eye is obtained via a camera. A multi-step filter is applied to the image for multiple iterations. Applying the multi-step filter includes, for each iteration, performing one or more pixel merge operations on the image. The pixel merge operations are controlled based on one or more input parameters to control whether or not the iteration classifies pixels of the image as corresponding to a feature of the eye. The one or more input parameters vary from at least one iteration to another. The iterations each output a provisional output, in which some pixels of the image are deemed as corresponding to the feature of the eye. The provisional outputs provide diverse definitions of the eye feature, and may be combined in various ways to yield a refined output, in which some pixels of the image are deemed as corresponding to the feature of the eye.

Eye feature identification

The present invention is directed to a facility for performing selected operations as part of a booting process of a computer system only during iterations of the booting process that immediately follow failed iterations of the booting process. At the beginning of the booting process, the facility copies a persistent instance of a flag indicating whether the iteration of the booting process at the current iteration of the booting process immediately follows fail to a temporary instance of the flag. The facility then assigns the persistent instance of the flag to the set condition so that, if the current iteration of the booting process fails before completing, the flag will reflect that the current iteration of the booting process failed. When each selected operation is encountered during the current iteration of the booting process, the facility performs that selected operation only if the temporary instance of the flag is set. If and when the current iteration of the booting process concludes successfully, the facility clears the persistent instance of the flag to reflect that the current iteration of the booting process completed successfully. In a further preferred embodiment, programs, such as the BIOS or the operating system, may set a second flag to explicitly request the performance of the selected operations during the next iteration of the booting process.

In a computer network including a plurality of interconnected computers, one of the computers being a sleeping computer in a power down state, the sleeping computer having a list of packets to listen for stored on a network interface card associated with the sleeping computer, a method of waking the sleeping computer from the computer network. An incoming packet of information is transmitted from one of the computers in the network to the sleeping computer. When the network interface card of the sleeping computer detects the incoming packet, it compares the incoming packet to the list of packets stored on the network interface card. If the incoming packet matches one of the packets in the list of packets stored on the network interface card, or if the incoming packet is directly addressed to the sleeping computer, then a signal is issued to wake the sleeping computer. Otherwise, the incoming packet is discarded and the sleeping computer is not awaken.

A method and system are disclosed for invoking a limited or 'fail-safe' functionality from a computer system having a graphical user interface (GUI). In one aspect, a computer operating system having GUI functionality can be activated with two different sets of GUI features. Normally, the operating system provides a full complement of GUI features. Alternatively, the operating system provides a more limited set of GUI features. The operating system invokes the limited set of GUI features either in response to a user command, such as a keyboard function key pressed during the bootstrap loading sequence of the operating system, or automatically in response to a failure of an attempt by the computer system to load the normal complement of GUI functions. With the limited set of GUI features, the user of the computer can take advantage of the power of graphical user interfaces even when the computer system is not operating normally. For example, the user can run graphically based diagnostic and repair programs from the 'fail-safe' mode. The invention finds application in stand-alone and networked computer systems and, in particular, in systems that store the bulk of the operating system software on a remote server accessible only by network.

A system and methods are provided for switching a signal from a first transmission media having a characteristic impedance to a second transmission media. The system includes a driver for driving a signal, the driver having a driver input having a high impedance relative to a characteristic impedance of the first transmission media and the driver having a driver output having an impedance equal to the characteristic impedance of the first transmission media. A first switch couples the driver output either to the first transmission media or to the second transmission media and couples a signal from the first transmission media, which is coupled to the driver input, either to the first transmission media or to the second transmission media. A first switch controller controls the first switch to either simultaneously couple the driver output to the first transmission media and the signal from the first transmission media coupled to the driver input to the second transmission media or simultaneously coupling the driver output to the second transmission media and the signal from the first transmission media coupled to the driver input to the first transmission media. A terminator having an impedance equal to the characteristic impedance of the first transmission media for terminating a signal from either the first or the second transmission media is switched by a second switch to terminate either the first or second transmission media.
