A coated monofilament comprising a polymeric monofilament and a coating of an amide melamine wax. The coated monofilament exhibits excellent lubricative and wear characteristics and can be reprocessed without adversely affecting the physical properties of the polymeric monofilament. A process for producing the said coated monofilament is also disclosed.

A heat and oxidation stabilized polymeric article, preferably fiber or film, is prepared by applying to the article a composition which comprises effective amounts of a nitrogen-containing antioxidant and a compatible carrier. When the composition is applied as a process finish, the carrier is a lubricant which is the reaction product of an alkylene oxide with a compound selected from the group consisting of a fatty acid having about 5 to 36 carbon atoms and an alcohol having about 5 to 36 carbon atoms, with the number of moles of alkylene oxide per mole of acid or alcohol ranging from 2 to 20. The stabilized article has utility in high performance applications.

Aqueous overfinish compositions, yarns treated therewith, and methods of producing wet abrasion resistant cordage from the yarn are all disclosed. One of the compositions includes an oxidized polyethylene emulsified with a nonnitrogen, nonionic emulsifier and neutralized with an alkali hydroxide, and a compound selected from the group consisting of a siloxane of the comonomers dimethyl and 3-[(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyl], and an amide melamine wax. An alternate finish composition comprises an oxidized polyethylene, neutralized with ammonium hydroxide and emulsified with a non-nitrogen, nonionic emulsifier. Yarn treated with this alternate finish has enhanced wet abrasion resistance. Yarns of this invention are ideally suited for heavy ropes and other industrial cordage applications where wet and dry abrasion resistance and strength are desirable.

A high tenacity fiber for reinforcing plastic composites, the fiber being selected from the group consisting of polyester, aliphatic polyamide, and combinations thereof. The fiber is treated with a composition consisting essentially of an organofunctional silane in an amount sufficient to achieve 0.02 to 1.0 weight percent of the silane on the fiber, and a diluent which provides for the hydrolysis of the silane to a silanol. A fiber finish composition for synthetic multifilament yarn comprising effective amounts of an amide melamine wax applied to the yarn in an amount of 0.1 to 0.5 weight percent of the wax solids on the yarn provides yarn that can be woven into narrow fabric without twisting. When the applied finish composition is heated sufficiently, the resulting fabric woven from substantially untwisted yarn retains excellent resistance to abrasion properties. The amide melamine wax is formed by reacting melamine with a C.sub.6 to C.sub.36, preferably C.sub.12 to C.sub.22, fatty acid to form a hydrophobic amide, and polymerizing the amide with formaldehyde.

An improved polyamide yarn for tire and industrial applications is prepared by applying to the yarn a finish composition comprising a diarylamine-ketone condensation product such as the low temperature reaction product of diphenylamine and acetone, and a compound selected from the group consisting of 1,3,5 tris(4t-butyl-3-hydroxy-2,6 dimethylbenzyl)-1,3,5 triazine-2,4,6(1H, 3H, 5H) trione and 1,3,5 tris(2 hydroxy ethyl)-s-triazine-2,4,6(1H, 3H, 5H) trione in effective amounts to provide improved adhesion of the fiber to rubber after aging the yarn.
