An internally illuminated sign having indirect illumination provided by light emitting diodes (LED). A plurality of LED's are mounted on a printed circuit board (PC board) and mounted within the sign. The PC board is offset to a side of the sign housing with the somewhat directional LED light source directed toward a reflector. The reflector is angled to convert the generally narrow directional light source of an LED into a substantially even, diffused and non-uniform light distribution pattern.

Apparatus and method of indirectly illuminating a sign

In an exit sign, an insertable battery pack module is designed to fit in the lower portion of the exit sign housing. This battery pack module incorporates a pair of lamps as well as a battery, battery charger and transfer circuitry. The module incorporates a pair of reflective surfaces so that light from lamp filaments tangentially hit at least a portion of the exit sign stenciled area along the bottom portion of the letters forming the word EXIT. If an exit sign is only to have utility AC power, then the module need not be installed within the exit sign. In this configuration, the bottom portion of the exit sign can incorporate a slidable panel which is removed if the battery pack module is later inserted. The battery pack module incorporates the indicator light and test button which then would show through the area where the panel formerly resided. This exit sign provides a clean appearance unlike prior art exit signs wherein the battery backup module is typically added onto the outside of the existing exit sign.

In an exit sign, a canopy bracket has a pair of resilient spring fingers which are inserted through a central circular opening of a mounting plate mounted to a standard electrical box located in a wall or ceiling. The spring fingers temporarily secure the canopy bracket to the mounting plate this allowing an electrician to easily align and secure screws to the mounting plate, thereby greatly facilitating installation. The wires from the electrical box are extended through mounting plate and the canopy prior to securing the canopy to the mounting plate. Once secured, the user simply fits a hub portion of the canopy bracket telescopically within an opening with the exit sign housing. Spring capture barb members of the hub engage the housing to fixedly secure the exit sign to the wall or ceiling. Then the user connects the wires extending from the canopy bracket to those in the exit sign.

A removable and reinsertible arrow cover for a sign stencil. The cover is equipped with an edge bevel, a tongue and an edge snap rail positioned remotely of the tongue to facilitate snap action insertion and removal as well as a snug, flush fit which provides a closed seal to the passage of light with an arrow shaped void in the stencil.

An emergency lighting fixture, for plug-in installation in a wall connector mounted protruding from a fixed wall plate, has a back plate secured to its wall-engaging face. The back plate and the wall plate are provided with interfitting flanges and a pivoted latch secures the plates together in facing juxtaposed engagement. A mating multi-prong plug and socket connects A.C. line power from the wall connector to internal circuitry in the lighting fixture for lighting a lamp, for charging a rechargeable internal battery and for operating a transfer circuit to deliver battery power in the event of line power failure. The conductor from one terminal of the battery is connected to said circuitry by two prong-and-socket pairs, in the multi-prong plug and socket, which are connected by a permanent jumper conductor in the wall connector, affording battery isolation in the lighting fixture until its plug-in installation in the wall connector is completed.

An illuminated sign with an opaque sign plaque employs a light source overlying the sign plaque embraced by a concave downward facing reflector, and a flat lower reflector underlying the sign plaque, providing both direct and reflected illumination over the face of the sign plaque. In its preferred form, the concave reflector is compoundly curved over the ends of the sign plaque and the flat lower reflector is tilted toward the sign plaque.
