An electrochemical battery cell is provided having a housing formed by a can and a cup, with a sealing gasket disposed therebetween. First and second electrodes and electrolyte are disposed within the housing. The cup has a peripheral wall and a cup edge portion that extends inward, away from the can wall at angle less than 180&#xb0; relative to a longitudinal axis of the cell housing. The gasket likewise has a base that extends inward, and a surface of the cup edge portion is sealingly engaged with the gasket base.

An electrochemical battery cell is provided having a housing formed by a can and a cup, with a sealing gasket disposed therebetween. First and second electrodes and electrolyte are disposed within the housing. The first electrode is provided in an electrode assembly that is bonded to the can in an air diffusion region to prevent doming of the electrode assembly.

A fluid consuming battery () is provided with a fluid regulating system () for regulating fluid entry into the battery. The battery () includes a fluid consuming cell () having a cell housing with fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell housing. A first fluid consuming electrode and a second electrode are disposed within the cell housing. The fluid regulating system () includes a valve having a moving plate () disposed adjacent to a fixed plate (). The moving plate and fixed plate both have fluid entry ports () that align in an open valve position and are misaligned in a closed valve position. The fluid regulating system () also includes an actuator that may include one or more shape memory alloy (SMA) components () for moving the moving plate () relative to the fixed plate () to open and close the valve.

A fluid consuming battery and method are provided for reducing electrode doming and providing an adequate sealed closure to the battery housing. The battery includes a cell housing having first and second housing components and at least one fluid entry port through a side of the cell housing for the passage of a fluid. The battery also has a gasket disposed between the first and second housing components. A first electrode is disposed within the cell housing in electrical contact with the first housing component and a second air electrode is provided in an electrode assembly disposed within the cell housing in electrical contact with the second housing component. The electrode assembly includes a first peripheral portion that is pre-compressed relative to a middle portion. The gasket has first and second extensions that bias against interior surfaces, and the second extension is radially inwards of an angled outward recess in the can.

An electrochemical cell with a vent assembly that reliably prevents resealing of a vented seal member is provided. The vent assembly seals the end of a container that includes a first electrode, a second electrode, a separator located between the first and second electrodes and an electrolyte in contact with the electrodes and separator. The seal member includes a diaphragm with a hinge along one edge and a vent along another edge. The hinge and vent are located so that, relative to the longitudinal axis of the vent assembly, the hinge is closer to the vent than to the cell's terminal cover.

A process for assembling an electrochemical cell that utilizes an electrode containment shield to prevent internal electrical short circuits that are caused by fragments of a frangible electrode coming into contact with the battery's opposing electrode. The shield, which may be secured to the current collector, is particularly useful with low volume seals that do not support the separator.

An electrochemical cell with a separator having a reinforced edge that provides structural rigidity to the separator after it has been contacted by the cell's electrolyte. The reinforced edge extends beyond the interface between the cell's electrodes and serves to contain fragmented pieces from one of the cell's electrodes that may become dislodged when the cell is dropped.

A pressurized container with a vent assembly that reliably prevents resealing of a vented seal member is provided. In one embodiment, the vent assembly seals the end of a container that includes a first electrode, a second electrode, a separator located between the first and second electrodes and an electrolyte in contact with the electrodes and separator. The seal member includes at least two protrusions on the surface of the seal member. The protrusions define and maintain a gap between the cover and seal member after the seal member has ruptured thereby allowing pressure within the container to be reduced.

A current collector and seal assembly for use in an electrochemical cell is provided. An electrochemical cell comprises a container generally having a closed bottom end, an open top end, and side walls extending between the top and bottom ends. Electrochemically active materials are disposed in the container, and generally include a positive electrode and a negative electrode. A current collector and seal assembly is provided to close the open end of the container and includes a resilient and electrically non-conductive seal body having an upstanding wall defining an opening therethrough. A current collector is inserted through the opening and into one of the electrochemically active components. A polymeric compression bushing compresses the upstanding wall so that the collector and compression bushing cooperate to exert radial compressive stress and tangential compressive stress on the upstanding wall after insertion of the current collector through the opening.

An electrochemical cell having a can for containing electrochemically active materials including positive and negative electrodes and electrolyte. The can has a bottom end and an open top end, and positive and negative electrodes disposed in the can. An inner metal cover is disposed in the open end of the can and has a first peripheral flange. An outer metal cover is disposed over the inner cover in the open end of the container and has a second peripheral flange juxtaposed to the first peripheral flange. A seal is disposed between the can and both the first and second peripheral flanges. The low profile seal assembly advantageously provides for reduced volume consumption thereby allowing for a greater amount of electrochemically active materials in the can.
