An additive manufacturing system for producing a structure includes a base assembly, an elongated member, a carriage, and a first member. The elongated member is fixedly coupled with the base assembly and extends upwards from the base assembly. The carriage is rotatably coupled with the elongated member and configured to translate upwards along the elongated member. The first member is fixedly coupled with and extends outwards from the carriage. The first member includes a material dispensing device configured to dispense material as the carriage rotates relative to the elongated member.

Systems and methods for additive manufacturing

A cargo tie down includes a retainer and a shackle. The retainer includes a barrel having a proximal end and a distal end and a flange extending radially outward from the proximal end of the barrel. The shackle includes an arcuate portion merging into a distal end of a first leg and a distal end of a second leg and a necking portion extending between a coupling end and an interface end. A hinge including a pin extends through the shackle and the distal end of the barrel. A proximal end of the first leg and a proximal end of the second leg are separated by a first width. The coupling end spans the first width and joins the proximal end of the first leg to the proximal end of the second leg. The width of the necking portion decreases as it extends from the coupling end to the interface end.

Vehicle armor includes a body panel of the vehicle having a stressed skin construction with an inside surface and an outside surface. A liner overlies the inside surface of the body panel and a particle-filled elastomer overlies the outside surface of the body panel. Thin, single-layer steel tiles overlie the elastomer layer, with the tiles each having a hardened outer side and a non-hardened inner side.

A iron-based material such as cast iron is made by a process wherein filler particles are added to an iron base metal, as the base metal is poured into the mold. Pieces containing ceramic filler particles held together by a binder can be disposed in the mold prior to pouring molten iron base metal therein. Molten iron base metal is then poured into the mold so that the molten base metal contacts the pieces, gradually dissolving the filler. The filler becomes distributed throughout the molten base metal within the mold. Upon cooling, the base metal has the filler distributed therein, resulting in a iron-based material. The resulting material is particularly useful for making vehicle parts normally made of cast iron or steel.
