A method of treating a laser-activated thermoplastic substrate having a metal compound dispersed therein is described. The substrate is contacted with an aqueous composition comprising: (i) a thiol functional organic compound; (ii) an ethoxylated alcohol surfactant; and (iii) xanthan gum. By use of the treatment composition, when the substrate is subsequently laser-activated and plated by electroless plating, extraneous plating of the substrate is substantially eliminated.

Method for improving plating on non-conductive substrates

The present invention relates to a method of selectively plating a plastic article comprising a first polymer resin portion and a second polymer resin portion, wherein said first polymer resin portion is not rendered plateable by sulfonation and said second polymer resin portion is rendered plateable by sulfonation. The method comprises the steps of sulfonating the plastic article, activating the sulfonated plastic article to accept plating thereon, and plating the sulfonated and activated article in an electroless plating bath. The plastic article is selectively plated such that the first polymer resin portion does not have plating thereon and the second polymer resin portion is electrolessly plated.

Selective deposition of metal on plastic substrates

An extended term resuscitation system includes a plurality of inflatable cuffs adapted to extend around separate portions of the anatomy of a patient (i.e. the chest, abdomen and legs) for enhancing the circulation when inflated/deflated periodically. A primary low-pressure-high-volume air compressor is in fluid communication with each of the cuffs through individual air handlers. The air handlers are formed with an inflation and a deflation diaphragm valve which, under the control of an electronic timer and a pneumatic circuit, connect the respective cuff to the output of the compressor for inflation or to the atmosphere for deflation. A secondary air compressor provides air under suitable pressure to the pneumatic circuit for the control of the diaphragm valves. As an option the operator may change the cyclical rate and cuff pressure. A ventilator provides oxygen to the patient in selected volumes or on demand.

Extended term patient resuscitation/ventilation system

A portable positive pressure breathing apparatus includes a demand valve with a supply inlet port adapted to be connected to a pressurized source of oxygen and an outlet port adapted to be connected to the inlet of a patient's breathing appliance. The demand valve further includes a reference chamber and a valve assembly responsive to the reference chamber/appliance inlet pressure differential for connecting/disconnecting the inlet port to and from the outlet port. At least one manually adjustable back pressure regulator is connected to the pressure source and the reference chamber for setting the pressure in the reference chamber (and inlet to the breathing appliance) at a selected level above atmospheric pressure.

Portable gas powered positive pressure breathing apparatus and method

A patient resuscitation/respiratory system includes a system control unit with a timer module controlling a plurality of air pressure modules. In an exemplary embodiment, the air pressure modules include a first air pressure module for controlling a first flow of pressurized gas from a first pressurized gas supply to an inflatable abdominal cuff, a second air pressure module for controlling a second flow of pressurized gas from the first gas supply to an inflatable chest cuff, and a third air pressure module for controlling a third flow of pressurized gas from the first gas supply to an inflatable leg cuff. The control unit in this embodiment includes a ventilator supply module for controlling a flow of breathable gas from a second pressurized gas supply to a patient ventilator module to periodically connect the patient ventilator module and the patient's lungs to the breathable gas supply. The timer module is configured to automatically cycle the plurality of air pressure modules to periodically inflate and deflate the cuffs in a resuscitation mode. The system control unit in a portable embodiment may be battery powered, and the gas supplies may be portable compressed gas cylinders.

Resuscitation/respiration system

An anti-g pressure regulator functions, in conjunction with a pressurized anti-g suit during high g loads, to supply O to a pilot's face mask during the inhalation phase with the O pressure rising from a predetermined minimum to a predetermined maximum as determined by the g load to increase the volume of O supplied to the pilot's lungs. During the exhalation phase the pressure is allowed to fall from the maximum to the minimum to reduce the stress experienced by the pilot during exhalation thereby enabling the pilot to tolerate high g loads. Optionally, the pressure of gas supplied to the anti-g suit may be controlled in a nonlinear manner with respect to the anticipated range of g-loads to improve the pilot's performance during exposure to intermediate g-loads.

Anti-g pressure regulator for supplying breathable gas to a pilot's face mask and method

A disposable food cutting utensil, oval or circular in construction with an integrated handle area, packaging support legs and slots, and a removable marketing element. The utensil has a tapered and scalloped or serrated cutting edge that follows along a portion of the perimeter of the device, and allows for the inclusion of a handle area. Packaging support legs may be provided that protrude an arbitrary length from one side of the utensil, at sufficient distance from the cutting edge. Radial slots between the support legs permit the nesting of multiple utensils. The removable merchandising element is held in place by thin sections of material that are sufficient to secure the element in place, but permits its removal by hand. The merchandising element is of an arbitrary shape and sufficient size as to not present a choking hazard to small children.

Disposable food cutting utensil

A resuscitation valve assembly includes a housing with an inlet port adapted to be connected to a pressurized breathable gas source, such as oxygen, an outlet port adapted to be connected to a patient's airway and an ambient air port. The inhalation chamber is connected to the pressurized gas source when a manually operated valve, within the housing, is open and is disconnected from the inhalation chamber when the valve is closed. An inhalation/exhalation check valve is disposed between the inhalation chamber, the outlet port and the ambient air port to conduct the high pressure gas through the outlet port and into the patient's airway, vent the patient's exhaled gas through the ambient air port and allow ambient air to flow through the outlet port in response to the patient's spontaneous breathing.

Resuscitation valve assembly

A method and apparatus for resuscitating the cardiac/pulmonary activity of a patient includes the use of pneumatically controlled inflatable/deflatable cuffs secured over the patient's legs and abdomen and optionally the chest. The cuffs are preferably inflated and deflated at a cyclical rate of 10-40 cycles/min. with the inflation/deflation mode of the chest cuff, if used, being out-of-phase with the operation of the abdominal cuff. A ventilator and face mask may be used to supply breathable air to the patient's airway in conjunction with the cyclical operation of the cuffs.

Cardiac/pulmonary resuscitation method and apparatus

A demand valve resuscitator includes an inlet for connection to a pressurized source of breathable gas, such as oxygen, and an outlet for connection to a patient's airway. A normally-closed-pressure-actuated main valve is positioned between the inlet port and an inhalation chamber for controlling the demand mode of operation. A main valve controller operates the main valve in response to a reduced pressure in the inhalation chamber resulting from the commencement of spontaneous breathing by the patient. The manual operating mode, i.e., not dependent upon the patient breathing spontaneously, is controlled by a bypass valve which supplies gas to the patient independently of the main valve. A manually adjustable pressure relief valve sets the peak gas pressure. Another manual control permits the operator to preset the maximum opening of the bypass valve and therefore the flow rate of gas to the patient.

Demand valve resuscitator

A canister containing one or more working compounds formed of a peroxide and/or superoxide of one or more metals of the alkali and alkaline-earth metal groups such as KO.sub.2 and CaO.sub.2 and a moisture releasing material such as wetted activated charcoal is utilized to replenish the oxygen and absorb the carbon dioxide in exhaled air. The canister may be used in a closed or semi-closed circuit breathing system worm by a user such as a fireman, miner etc.

Method and apparatus for revitalizing exhaled air

A closed circuit breathing apparatus for supplying breathable air to a facepiece to be worn by a user while working in an irrespirable atmosphere is disclosed. The apparatus includes an inhalation and an exhalation section connected to the facepiece. A CO.sub.2 scrubber and a rebreather bag are connected in series between the inhalation and exhalation sections. A motorized fan is disposed in the inhalation section for continuously pumping air from the rebreather bag to the inhalation section. A pressure reducing valve supplies make up air from a tank of pressurized oxygen enriched air to the inhalation section. The fan and pressure reducing valve are arranged to supply sufficient air flow (e.g., 10 to 150 LPM) to the facepiece to maintain a positive face piece pressure under the anticipated normal use of the apparatus. A demand valve supplies additional air from the pressure reducing valve to the inhlation section to maintain a positive pressure at the facepiece during periods of peak demand (e.g. flow rates exceeding 150 LPM) and fan failure.
