An incandescent lamp having an envelope of hardglass. The envelope encloses a tungsten filament and contains a fill material including an inert fill gas and a halogen additive. A coating of silicon dioxide (i.e., silica) is disposed on a substantial portion of the internal surface of the envelope. The silicon dioxide coating prevents the halogen additive from combining with alkaline ions of the hardglass envelope.

Filament supports for supporting and centering a filament in a double-ended lamp envelope include an inlead portion defining a central axis, a filament attachment portion and a centering portion interconnecting the inlead portion and the filament attachment portion. The centering portion contacts an inner surface of the lamp envelope at a plurality of discrete, circumferentially spaced-apart contact regions that are substantially equally spaced from the central axis. The filament supports are attached to opposite ends of the filament for accurately centering the filament within the lamp envelope. The filament supports are particularly useful in a tubular incandescent lamp capsule having an infrared reflective coating on its outer surface.

A method for mounting a filament in a double ended incandescent lamp capsule. A filament assembly, including a filament, filament supports attached to each end of the filament and an external lead connected to each filament support, is located in a tubular lamp envelope. The position of the filament relative to the lamp envelope is determined, and the filament is moved to a predetermined position relative to the lamp envelope, if necessary. Then, the lamp envelope is heated sufficiently to cause the lamp envelope to deform into contact with at least one of the filament supports so as to securely anchor the filament support. The heating of the lamp envelope in regions of the filament supports can be performed simultaneously or at different times. One or both filament supports can be anchored by the tacking process.

This invention provides a tungsten-halogen lamp having a thin-wire filament and a hydrogen-impervious envelope. Containment of hydrogen within the lamp envelope suppresses tungsten corrosion of the filament and prevents early termination of the lamp. In the preferred embodiment, an aluminosilicate glass is employed as the hydrogen-impervious envelope material. This invention overcomes a substantial impediment in the development of a feasible tungsten-halogen lamp as a replacement for the standard Edison-type lamp for general lighting purposes.

The copper can be present as one of the lead-in wires; a plating on the lead-in wires; a separate copper insert; or a coating on the filament. It is believed the copper acts as an oxygen getter.

An electric heating element for igniting gas fuel comprises a hermetically sealed envelope made of at least 99% pure alumina and filled with a non-oxidizing gas such as hydrogen or one of the inert gases. A self-supporting coiled coil of tungsten or other refractory metal conductor dimensioned to carry a linear power loading of at least one hundred watts per inch is disposed in the envelope with coiling of the coiled coil pressing the peripheral surfaces of the coiled conductor into thermal and mechanical contact with the interior wall of the envelope. An electrical heating element for ovens, furnaces and other infrared light applications comprises an elongate tubular envelope of thermally translucent refractory material such as pure alumina enclosing an elongate coiled refractory metal conductor which is capable of carrying a linear power loading of at least one hundred watts per inch. Refractory spacers along the coiled conductor and envelope hold the conductor spaced from the envelope and coaxial therewith so that the conductor attains heat in excess of the temperature limit of the envelope.
