Drill bits and cutting elements having a functionally-engineered surface comprise a cermet material selected from the group consisting of refractory metal carbides, nitrides, borides, carbonitrides and mixtures thereof. A functionally-engineered material is disposed over a surface portion one of the cutting elements to form a wear resistant surface thereon having a hardness that is different than that of the underlying cutting element. The wear resistant surface is provided by forming a conformable material mixture by combining one or more powders selected from the group consisting of cermets, carbides, borides, nitrides, carbonitrides, refractory metals, diamond particles, cubic boron nitride particles, Co, Fe, Ni, and combinations thereof, with an applying agent. The applied material mixture is pressurized under conditions of elevated temperature to consolidate and sinter the material mixture, thereby forming the wear resistant surface having desired properties of hardness and/or fracture toughness.

Drill bit with cutting elements having functionally engineered wear surface

A bit body formed of a mixture of matrix material and superabrasive powder and including pockets lined with superabrasive-free matrix material, and a method for forming the same, are provided. The pockets are shaped to receive cutting elements therein. The superabrasive-free matrix material enhances braze strength when a cutting element is brazed to surfaces of the pocket. The method for forming the drill bit body includes providing a mold and displacements. The displacements are coated with a mixture of superabrasive free matrix-material and an organic binder. The mold is packed with a mixture of matrix material and superabrasive powder and the arrangement heated to form a solid drill bit body. When the solid bit body is removed from the mold, pockets are formed by the displacements in the bit body and are lined with the layer of superabrasive-free matrix material. The superabrasive material may be diamond, polycrystalline cubic boron nitride, SiC or TiBin exemplary embodiments.

A high-temperature lubricant is shown and described. The lubricant includes a base stock and about 1 to about 20 weight percent zirconium 2-ethylhexanoate. The lubricant may also include about 1 to about 9 weight percent bismuth 2-ethylhexanoate.

A rotary cone bit, having a functionally-engineered surface of this invention, comprises a bit body having at least one leg extending therefrom, and a cone that is rotatably disposed on the leg. The cone typically comprises a plurality of cutting elements that project outwardly therefrom. The cutting elements comprises a cermet material selected from the group consisting of refractory metal carbides, nitrides, borides, carbonitrides and mixtures thereof. A functionally-engineered material is disposed over a surface portion of at least one of the cutting elements to form a wear resistant surface thereon. The wear resistant surface has a hardness that is different than that of the underlying cutting element. The wear resistant surface is provided by forming a conformable material mixture by combining one or more powders selected from the group consisting of cermets, carbides, borides, nitrides, carbonitrides, refractory metals, Co, Fe, Ni, and combinations thereof, with an applying agent. The applied material mixture is pressurized under conditions of elevated temperature to consolidate and sinter the material mixture, thereby forming the wear resistant surface. The material mixture is consolidated and sintered in a manner that avoids unwanted material migration between the applied material mixture and substrate, thereby providing a fully-densified wear surface having desired properties of hardness and/or fracture toughness.

Ordered elastomeric composites comprise an ordered arrangement of a number of first elastomeric phases distributed uniformly within a continuous matrix second elastomeric phase. The second phase can be formed from an elastomeric material that is relatively harder than an elastomeric material that is used to form the first phases. Each first phase can be in the form of a core having a defined length and diameter, and the second phase can be formed from a number of shells that each surround a respective core. In a preferred embodiment, the arrangement of cores and shells are aligned coaxially with one another to provide a cellular structure. Ordered elastomeric composites of this invention can be used to form part of or an entire elastomeric seal, e.g., in the form of an annular ring adapted for use in a rotary cone drill bit.

A lubricating grease is specific for a rock bit for drilling subterranean formations. The rock bit body includes a plurality of journal pins, each having a bearing surface, with a cutter cone mounted on each journal pin and also including a bearing surface. A grease reservoir provides lubricating grease to such bearing surfaces. The grease composition adjacent the bearing surfaces comprises a lubricating base oil, sufficient thickener and additives in the base oil to form a rock bit grease, and an effective amount of polarized graphite.

O-ring seals for rock bit bearings comprise a body formed from an elastomeric material having a lubricant additive in at least the dynamic seal surface to reduce the coefficient of friction and stick-slip amplitude at O-ring seal surfaces. The lubricant additive comprises polarized graphite. O-ring seals made from elastomeric compositions comprise in the range of from about 50 to 99 percent by volume elastomeric material, and in the range of from about 1 to 50 percent by volume of the polarized graphite based on the total volume of the composition. Preferably, the polarized graphite is in the range of from 7 to 25 percent by volume. As the O-ring seal experiences wear from adjacent metal surfaces, flakes of polarized graphite are released from the O-ring seal and adhere to the adjacent metal surfaces and form a lubricating film.
