A laser catheter for the treatment of lesions and plaque deposits in arteries and other narrow paths having a radiation assembly affixed to a flexible conduit. The conduit generally includes multiple lumens for the passage of an optical fiber, a guide wire, a cooling medium therethrough, or fluid for inflating an angioplasty balloon. The radiation assembly is of short longitudinal profile and includes a generally spherical laser contact member retained within a housing, the latter affixed to the flexible conduit. The radiation assembly provides a dual-mode ablation/melting treatment regime. A longitudinal channel is provided through and along one side of the contact member thereby to permit guide wire positioning of the laser catheter while routing the guide wire away from the laser energy to avoid damage thereto. A balloon, in fluid communication with a catheter lumen, may be positioned rearwardly of the radiation assembly for secondary balloon angioplasty operations.

Laser catheter apparatus for use in arteries or other narrow paths

A laser photo optic breakdown probe and handpiece system especially suited for small-incision cataract removal including an optical fiber through which a pulsed source of laser energy is delivered to a target spaced from the distal end of the fiber. The fiber is routed through a first guide tube with the target mounted at an angle on the end thereof. Holes are provided in the guide tube for the flow of infusion fluid therethrough. A second aspiration tube surrounds and provides rigidity to the guide tube, shields the distal end of the fiber and target, and serves as a channel for aspirated fluids and dislodged cataractous material. The guide tube is affixed to a transfer housing to which infusion and aspiration connections are made. The aspiration tube forms part of a handle assembly which is detachably coupled to the transfer housing.

Photo optic breakdown probe

A handpiece for use with laser surgical contact scalpels having a housing or handle portion with a laser enabling button thereon whereby a surgeon may expeditiously cycle the laser between its on and off conditions. The handpiece further including a mechanism for facilitating the longitudinal and rotational adjustment of the surgical scalpel with respect to the handle whereby optical fiber torque may be relieved and whereby the surgical tip may be oriented properly with respect to the laser actuation button. The adjustment mechanism includes torsional and longitudinal travel limits to protect button interconnect wires and means for locking the mechanism thereby to fix the relative positions of the scalpel and handle. The laser enabling button and associated circuitry including a low voltage self-contained power source and, further, optical isolation from the laser source whereby the laser may be cycled by the surgeon through use of the handpiece button without danger of electrical shock to the patient.

Adjustable touch control handpiece

A microsurgical irrigation/aspiration system is provided, including a controller having a pump roller head, actuators for occluding fluid lines, a suction sensor, and means for mounting a pump cassette. The system cassette is suitable for mounting on the controller and has an opening with a pump segment passing along an arcuate wall of the opening. When the cassette is mounted on the console, the roller head is engaged in the cassette opening and compresses the pump segment against the arcuate wall. An infusion line passes through the cassette and is occludable by one of the actuators, and a vent line connected to the pump segment is occludable by a second actuator. A suction sensing port on the cassette couples with the suction sensor in the controller. In an alternate embodiment, a cassette is disclosed within which both vacuum and peristaltic pumping is possible. Latching may be accomplished by a plunger attached to the sensory port of the cassette.

Disposable vacuum/peristaltic pump cassette system

A fluid supply system for gas and sterile liquids consisting of a disposable sterile cartridge that is connected to gas and liquid sources and a common exhaust. The cartridge cooperates with a rotating bearing assembly which pumps the liquid through the system without ever contacting the liquid. The gas sources are provided with means for supplying the gas under pressure to the cartridge. A suitable control selects either the gas or liquid source and a pair of gauges monitor the flow rates of the fluids.

Supply system for sterile fluids and gases in laser surgery

A microsurgical irrigation/aspiration system is provided, including a controller having a pump roller head, actuators for occluding tubing, a suction sensor, and apparatus for mounting a pump cassette. The system cassette is suitable for mounting on the controller and has an opening with a pump tubing segment passing along an arcuate wall of the opening. When the cassette is mounted on the console, the roller head is engaged in the cassette opening and compresses the pump tubing segment against the arcuate wall. An infusion line passes through the cassette and is occludable by one of the actuators, and a vent line connected to the pump tubing segment is occludable by a second actuator. A suction sensing port on the cassette couples with the suction sensor in the controller.

Disposable peristaltic pump cassette system

The disposable adaptor to permit aspiration and/or irrigation fluid to pass through an ultrasonic surgical instrument without permitting leakage of the fluid from or into the interior of the instrument. The adaptor includes a generally annular housing defining a lumen for receiving the horn of the ultrasonic instrument and having inner seals forming a seal between the confronting surface of the adaptor and horn for prohibiting leakage along the exterior wall of the horn and an outer seal for forming a tight seal between the confronting surface of the adaptor and the instrument shroud for prohibiting leakage along the exterior surface of the adaptor. The adaptor includes a flange at its distal end with a circumferential groove extending partially about the adaptor and cooperating with a mating projection on the distal end of the instrument shroud to provide rotational orientation for the adaptor with respect to the shroud.

Aspiration fitting adaptor

Means for attaching a pommel to a cartridge magazine assembly which is releasably received within the grip of a handgun. The pommel (16) has a face (79) which is engageable with the base of the magazine. A plateau (87) rises from the face and has slots (100) formed in it. Complimentary flanges (54) are formed on the base of the magazine and are engageable with the slots in the plateau to join the pommel and magazine together. There are means (58) to releasably interlock the pommel and the magazine assembly when they are in assembled relationship.

Handgun magazine with pommel base

A pommel and means for mounting it to the closed end of a magazine which is releasably contained within a recess in the butt end of the grip of a handgun. The pommel (16) has a recessed interior (80) and exterior periphery (26, 27) which is complementary to and coincident with the shape of the butt end (13) of a handgun. There are releasable interlock means (72, 74) on the magazine (14) and complementary releasable interlock means (72, 74) on the magazine (14) and complementary releasable interlock means (98, 99) within the internal confines of the pommel.

A unique pommel or butt plate for handgun stocks is described. The pommel comprises a pommel plate (32) having a mounting boss (34) extending from the inner surface of plate (32) and a mounting pin (36) extending from a mounting boss (34). The pommel can be secured to a stock by inserting the mounting pin (36) into a mortised section (40) and pre-drilled hole (38) on the inner surface of one of the stocks (24).
