A seal for use in sealing an annular opening between a stationary member and a rotating cylinder telescopically arranged in the stationary member, the seal comprising an annular ring member circumscribing the cylinder adjacent the stationary member and closing the annular opening. The seal comprises weighting means extending axially away from a back side of the ring member to provide a counterweighting effect which causes a tilting of the ring member, whereby said tilting and the rotation of the cylinder moves the ring member into engagement with the stationary member to substantially seal the annular opening, all in accordance with the teaching of U.S. Pat. No. 3,042,389. In accordance with the present invention, means forming part of the seal is provided for adjusting the internal diameter of the annular ring member to compensate for manufacturing tolerances in the annular ring member and/or dimensional tolerances in the outer diameter of the rotating cylinder. In a further feature of the construction, the annular ring member is divided into a plurality of circumferentially extending segments in which adjacent segments are pivotally connected to each other to permit articulation of the segments to accommodate 'out-of-round' portions of the rotating cylinder.

Seal for rotating cylinder such as kilns and the like

An arrangement for mounting a cooling cowl on the discharge end of a rotary kiln which allows for radial and axial differential expansion between kiln and cowl. The cowl is mounted on the kiln contiguous the kiln discharge end, with the cowl being positioned radially outwardly of the outer peripheral surface of the kiln to define an annulus between the inner peripheral surface of the cowl and the outer peripheral surface of the kiln through which cooling air can flow. A radially outer set of end castings is supported by the kiln at the discharge end and defines an axial end closure for the annulus. A radially inner set of end castings is supported by the kiln at the discharge end and retains the 'nose brick' of the kiln lining. Both the radially outer and the radially inner end castings are supported by the kiln so as to be structurally independent of the cowl. A plurality of spacer bars made of a flexible material such as steel is positioned in the annulus, the bars extending in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the kiln and being angularly spaced apart, the respective bars being fixedly secured at one end thereof only to the cowl and at the opposite end thereof only to the kiln. A pair of keeper blocks, preferably supported by the cowl, are positioned contiguous opposite circumferentially spaced sides of a given spacer bar whereby to substantially prevent circumferential shifting of the cowl.

Cooling arrangement for rotary kiln

Articulated seal for rotating cylinder such as kiln or the like

Apparatus is disclosed in which a coal burner pipe may be re-aimed into a rotary kiln. The burner pipe extends through a suitable opening provided in the associated hood of the kiln, with the discharge end of the burner pipe being so disposed as to discharge parallel to or obtusely to the axis of the kiln. Exteriorly of the kiln the coal burner pipe is provided with rigid angular pipe sections which can be reoriented relative to each other for effecting the re-aiming of the coal burner pipe within the kiln.

Rotary kiln service stands

An apparatus is disclosed in which a raw material feed delivery pipe is connected to the periphery of a vertical conduit that receives gases from a rotary kiln and conducts such gases upwardly to a location where the gases are divided between a pair of cyclone gas-solids-separator heat exchangers comprising a first stage of raw material preheating. An axially movable and rotatable sleeve is mounted over the discharge end of the pipe, and the sleeve is provided with a terminal nozzle portion curved to discharge raw material at an obtuse included angle to the axis of the delivery pipe. A method is disclosed by which the sleeve is moved along the pipe and rotated relative to the pipe, to change the nozzle discharge location and deflection angle relative to the rising gas stream, until an equal temperature drop of gases in both heat exchangers is achieved and balanced loading thereof is thereby indicated.
